Cambodia has called for a ceasefire with Thailand after two days of border clashes between the two countries.
According to AFP, after the closed emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in New York on Jul. 25, Chhea Keo, Cambodia’s ambassador to the UN, stated the Cambodia has called for an ‘immediate ceasefire’.
He added that Cambodia also hopes “for the peaceful solution of the dispute”.
Thailand had previously said on Jul. 25, before the UNSC meeting, that it was open to diplomatic talks with Cambodia.
Thai Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura said that Bangkok was open to talks, possibly aided by Malaysia, AFP reported.
He said that Thailand is ready, “if Cambodia would like to settle this matter via diplomatic channels, bilaterally, or even through Malaysia”.
Malaysia is currently the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), of which Thailand and Cambodia are both members.
More than 30 killed as a result of clashes
According to The Guardian, the ongoing military clashes have killed at least 19 people in Thailand, with Cambodia confirming that a total of 13 people have been killed on their side.
Thailand’s health ministry has said that more than 138,000 have been evacuated from Thailand’s border regions.
In Cambodia, more than 35,000 have been driven from their homes, BBC reported.
The death toll across the two countries is now higher than the 28 killed during the last major round of fighting between 2008 and 2011.
