The driver of a Singapore-registered car involved in an early morning road traffic incident at Tuas Checkpoint on Mar. 24 has been arrested.

42-year-old male Singaporean driver

According to a joint release by the Singapore Police Force (SPF) and Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), the driver is a 42-year-old Singaporean man.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the man was allegedly intoxicated and driving at high speed along the viaduct leading to Tuas Checkpoint.

He reportedly lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the observation point (OP).

This caused his vehicle to flip over and hit a 28-year-old Certis Auxiliary Police Officer (APO) who was on duty.

APO still receiving medical attention

The driver suffered lacerations and remained conscious while the APO was rendered unconscious.

Both were conveyed to the National University Hospital (NUH), where the APO was “assessed to have sustained severe head injury at this point”, ICA said in its previous statement.

Certis said in its Facebook post that the APO required “emergency surgery”.

ICA told Mothership that the APO was still “receiving medical attention” at NUH as of the time of writing.

Arrested for dangerous driving and drink driving

The 42-year-old Singaporean man was arrested for dangerous driving causing grievous hurt and for drink driving.

Additionally, his vehicle was seized and his driver’s driving licence has been suspended with immediate effect.

If convicted of dangerous driving causing grievous hurt, the man may be jailed for between one to five years and may be disqualified from driving all classes of vehicles.

If convicted of drink driving, he may be fined not less than S$2,000 and not more than S$10,000, jailed up to 12 months, or both.

Police investigations are ongoing.
