It’s been said that low crime doesn’t mean no crime — Singapore is relatively safe and its residents generally law-abiding, but there are still troublemakers out there.

That fact is becoming clearer with time, as people in Singapore tap on technology — specifically mobile phones and their video recording capability — to expose the misdeeds of others, and sometimes themselves.

A group of young males, who appear to be in their teens, did just that at a shelter along Punggol Waterway Park.

Now, footage of the incident is circulating on social media.

Threw bicycle into water

An 11-second clip, shared on Telegram, shows a group of at least five youths watching or filming as one of them picks up a bicycle.

The bicycle appeared to have only one wheel, and the remaining one appeared to be badly damaged.

The youth holding the bicycle walks to the water’s edge, as others from the group film him.

He then throws it into the water, and one from the group shouts, “Yoink!”

The shelter where the incident took place appears to be located near Block 663B Punggol Drive.

Similar past incidents

There have been similar previous incidents involving youths, bicycles, and waterbodies.

A number of them took place in Punggol as well.

In one incident from 2017, four teenagers were arrested over a bicycle that was thrown into a canal.

Then, in 2018, a 16-year-old youth was filmed throwing a bicycle off the Lorong Halus bridge despite being warned of getting “Stomped”.

He repeated the act in a separate incident, before getting implicated in a police investigation.

The boy told The New Paper that he did it because he was feeling stressed at home and school.

He said he regretted his decision and promised not to do it again.

“I should have ignored my friends instead of listening to them,” he said.

“I know it isn’t the right thing to do and I regret my decision. I’m really sorry.”

“Now people around me make jokes about me when they see me and I feel really stressed out about the situation.”
