MAGA war erupts live on CNN as panelist Scott Jennings is attacked by fellow Republican over claims he spoke to Mitch McConnell

CNN anchor Abby Phillip was forced to referee a tense confrontation between two conservatives during Thursday’s edition of NewsNight.

Caroline Sunshine, a former aide to Donald Trump and ex-Disney Channel actress, clashed with senior commentator Scott Jennings during the exchange.

Sunshine accused Jennings of being dishonest about previous phone conversations with Senator Mitch McConnell.

The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican was released from a rehabilitation facility after falling at his home on June 14. He has not yet returned to the Senate.

Jennings, 48, told his followers on X the following month that he had spoken with McConnell for “just shy of 20 minutes” while the senator was “still recovering.”

When Sunshine was asked whether she accepted Donald Trump’s claim that Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapon, she turned her attention to Jennings.

“I don’t believe you had a phone call with Mitch McConnell… I’ll tell you that,” she said.

Jennings, who has reportedly been considered for the role of White House press secretary, laughed as the discussion became increasingly heated.

After being asked if she believed the administration's claims that Iran is attempting to build a nuclear weapon, Sunshine cast doubt on a story Jennings offered about recovering Senator Mitch McConnell, that claimed the two spoke for 20 minutes on the phone in July

Asked whether she believed the administration’s claim that Iran is trying to develop a nuclear weapon, Sunshine questioned Jennings’ account of a 20-minute phone call with recovering Senator Mitch McConnell in July

Sunshine, 30, repeated her challenge: “I don’t believe you had a 20-minute phone call with Mitch McConnell, and I know a lot of people don’t either.”

“Okay, we’re not going to change the subject,” Phillip cut in as she tried to steer the discussion back on course.

“You sound like a garden variety conspiracy theorist,” Jennings replied.

“We are not going to change the subject in the middle of this,” Phillip said again, attempting to rein in the pair.

“How is he? Have you talked to him lately?” Sunshine asked.

Jennings answered with a brief “yes,” after which Phillip moved quickly to a commercial break.

“All right. Next for us, ICE arrests are soaring across the United States, but all the targets aren’t criminals,” she said in introducing the next segment.

“Plus, the president trolls Canada by renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America, a move that one person at this table says is aimed at stupid people. We’ll debate.”

'Okay, we're not going to change the subject,' Phillip interjected, trying to keep the conversation on-track

McConnell’s office released a photograph of the senator smiling with his wife, former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, on July 26. It was the second update issued after what many viewed as a “proof of life” image of the recovering Republican.

The Kentucky senator’s office also released a statement in which McConnell said the fall had left him “briefly unconscious.”

“My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages,” McConnell said.

“While receiving excellent care over the past several weeks, I’ve also had to deal with a mild case of pneumonia.

“But rest assured that, in the meantime, I’m not taking a break from the Senate business that matters to you,” he added.

“I’ve also been keeping in touch with my Senate colleagues on the appropriations process, midterm politics, and everything in between.”

The senator’s latest health problems follow several hospitalizations in recent years.

He made headlines twice in 2023 after appearing to “freeze” while speaking to groups of reporters.

McConnell is now serving the final term of his Senate career before retiring.

Before stepping down, he had been the longest-serving Senate leader in American history.

Sunshine began appearing on NewsNight in June.

That month, she attracted widespread attention after a viral confrontation with former Bill Clinton aide Keith Boykin over the administration’s immigration policies.

Sunshine also engaged in a heated debate with ABC News contributor Tara Setmayer last month over Trump’s unsuccessful effort to end birthright citizenship.

She first became known for co-starring in the Disney Channel series Shake It Up. In 2018, she joined Trump’s White House after appearing in the 2017 television movie Mommy, I Didn’t Do It.

Like Jennings, Sunshine describes herself as a committed conservative. The Republican Party has faced internal divisions as the war approaches its seventh month.
