If you caught my earlier article on the $30 million Homekey+ hotel scam pushed by California Democrats, you know how liberal bureaucrats in Los Angeles County were ready to ram a taxpayer-funded project through right in the heart of Torrance.
Well, in a rare and decisive victory, grassroots activists and local Republican leadership have proven conservative organizing still matters, even in the belly of the beast.
The target was the Extended Stay America hotel on Torrance Boulevard, slated to be converted into a 120-unit permanent supportive housing facility under the state’s Homekey+ program. The project was pushed by the far-left-led Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, ignoring the concerns of local residents, business owners, and Torrance City officials.
Enter Mayor George Chen. The Republican mayor didn’t just voice objections; he led a coordinated effort with city council members and a coalition of committed locals to block the plan. Chen recognized that this was about more than a single hotel. It was about defending the character and safety of his community from a county-level power grab.
As he said at the time:
“We hear our community, and we share your concerns. The Homekey+ proposal was advanced without collaboration, and it places a complex and sensitive use in a location that is simply not right for Torrance… we urge Los Angeles County and Weingart Center to pause, listen, and work with us on solutions that truly reflect the values and safety of our community.”

Behind the scenes, this effort had plenty of GOP muscle. Los Angeles County Republicans, many working quietly in the trenches, helped mobilize support, organize petitions, and pressure decision-makers to reconsider. Residents flooded city meetings with opposition, people peacefully protested in the streets, and the combined effort made the project politically impossible to move forward.

The result?
A few days ago, the nonprofit Weingart Center, which had initially been slated to manage the project, withdrew its funding application, effectively halting the Homekey+ hotel conversion.
That’s right: a Republican mayor, local officials, and a mobilized community defeated a liberal county initiative in one of the most liberal strongholds in the country!
This isn’t just a win for Torrance. It’s a win for Republicans in Los Angeles County, proof that organized conservatives can fight and win against entrenched liberal power. It’s a reminder that with leadership, strategy, and grassroots activism, even deep-blue areas can produce conservative victories that build momentum for future campaigns.

Today, that plan is dead, and the people of Torrance, along with their Republican allies, can claim a decisive victory. As we continue to rebuild a conservative infrastructure across L.A. County, this win should serve as both a blueprint and a rallying cry.
Grassroots activism matters. Republican leadership is working. Momentum is building.
The deep blue can be challenged, and this is just the beginning.
