Matt Doherty challenged his Wolves team-mates to prove they are not ‘cowards’ as they close in on an unwanted Premier League record.
If Wolves do not win at Liverpool next weekend, they will have failed to take a victory from any of their opening 18 games, which has never happened since the Premier League began in 1992.
Speaking to Premier League Productions after the 2-0 home defeat by Brentford, Doherty said: ‘Do we want to be remembered for fighting until the end of the season or do we want to be remembered for being cowards and taking maybe the easy option out? Maybe trying to leave in January or letting other people take your position?
‘This is the worst I’ve felt in a long time. The stadium was nearly empty at the end and not full at the start. We are just lacking the belief to win a game.
‘We are scared to win a game, almost. Nervous about going ahead and trying to hold on. It feels like we are watching the same game back every week.
‘We need something, whether that is in the loan market or whatever. We are going to need some fresh energy, I’m not going to say which positions but we need something.

The bottom placed club suffered defeat again against Brentford on Saturday, losing 2-0

‘I’m sure behind the scenes the club will be looking, from what I remember the club has always been proactive in the January market. We are going to need everyone to find the level of last season.’
Doherty has seen the highs and lows with Wolves. He was a key member of the side during the Nuno Espirito Santo era, when Wolves finished seventh twice, reached the FA Cup semi-finals and the quarter-finals of the Europa League. He was also relegated to League One during his time at Molineux.
Boss Rob Edwards has overseen six straight defeats since replacing Vitor Pereira. He added: ‘We cannot give up now. That would be crazy. I will fight, the staff will fight, and we need the players to come together and fight too.’
