Dress codes can be tricky to navigate at the best of times... and one childcare worker appears to have made a fashion faux pas with her choice of work attire (stock image)

Dress codes can be tricky to navigate at the best of times… and one childcare worker appears to have made a fashion faux pas with her choice of work attire.

One mom recently caused a divide in an Upper West Side Moms’ private Facebook group after accusing her nanny of dressing inappropriately – and asking for guidance about the best way to address it.

The anonymous New York mom took to the online forum to share her concerns, explaining the family recently hired a female nanny. She explained that both she and her husband like her approach to childcare but do have one problem.

‘We (particularly my husband) have a bit of an issue with how she dresses,’ the mom began the divisive post.

She continued, explaining the nanny wears ‘thin leggings that look like tights (with no underpants) and small, tight shirts that stop at the waist (but no midriff showing).’

The mom said the nanny is in her late 40s, adding that it is ‘not really a mistake of youth.’

‘I assume she wants to be comfortable for her active job but her outfits leave little to the imagination,’ she whined.

The mom added that it makes her husband, who works from home, ‘uncomfortable’ and he doesn’t want their daughter to start dressing like the nanny.

‘I’m not sure if we can talk to her about it,’ she wrote in the forum. ‘If we mention it, what is a diplomatic way?’

The thread immediately sparked a heated response, with moms on both sides of the fashion debate sharing their opinions.

On the one hand, many took sympathy on the mom and slammed the nanny for her seemingly scandalous choice of attire.

‘She is your employee, you are the employer. Have her wear a uniform and that’s it,’ one member wrote.

‘I’m a grown woman in my late 40s, I’d be so embarrassed if a client had to tell me I look inappropriate,’ another woman, who said she was a massage therapist, shared.

‘It’s a job, dress professionally,’ blasted another, in part.

However, there were others that had a more sympathetic outlook about the ensemble – before some even turned on the mom’s husband.

‘Tight leggings and a shirt that doesn’t show midriff? That’s honestly not terrible, and I’m a modest person.’

‘I don’t know how tights and a shirt that covers the midriff is leaving “little to the imagination,”‘ she wrote, also pointing out that the parents won’t be able to control what their daughter wears forever.

‘Tell your husband to unlearn his deep misogyny and do better,’ she raged. ‘And for you, stop being permissive of his behavior.’

There were some useful solutions in the mix of responses too including one woman who suggested pulling the nanny aside to point out that her crotch is on full display as she may not realize that her leggings are sheer.

‘If she’s like, “I’m super into that look,” then that’s a no. If she’s like, “oh s**t sorry,” then she’ll fix it and there you have it,’ the mom continued.

According to Nanny Magazine, there are some guidelines to follow when dressing for the job.

The publication suggests staying away from high heels, low-cut tops, and clothing containing ‘messages on the booty.’

‘While it’s important to take pride in our appearance and look professional while working, it’s crucial that we remain comfortable and ready for anything,’ the publication said.
