Three Secret Service officials placed on leave in explosive misconduct investigation that goes right to the top

Three Secret Service officials, including the agency’s senior communications executive, have been removed from their posts as part of an internal misconduct investigation.

Communications director Anthony Guglielmi and two colleagues from his department left the agency’s offices on Monday, sources told Real Clear Politics.

According to CNN, all three officials have been placed on leave, had their security clearances suspended and surrendered their government-issued devices.

The Secret Service has declined to provide details about the inquiry, which reportedly involves both the CIA and the FBI.

The investigation comes as FBI director Kash Patel continues efforts to identify the source of a media leak concerning Donald Trump’s secret departure from Turkey following last month’s NATO summit.

The report claimed the President was moved off Air Force One inside a catering cart, while several Cabinet officials remained behind. Trump reportedly took only a small group of close aides, including personal secretary Natalie Harp, because of an alleged Iranian assassination threat.

The latest development adds to growing scrutiny of the Secret Service, which has faced a series of high-profile security failures while protecting Trump.

FBI agents are said to have interviewed several Secret Service officials after reports revealed that Trump did not leave Turkey aboard the Qatari aircraft gifted to him.

Guglielmi has led the Secret Service communications division since the Biden administration, including through the aftermath of the attempted assassination of Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. That incident prompted the agency’s then-director to resign.

Before joining the federal agency, he served as communications chief for the Chicago and Baltimore police departments during periods of widespread civil unrest.

Last month, Guglielmi disclosed that an agent assigned to Vice President JD Vance had become the subject of a criminal investigation over an alleged leak to the media.

That inquiry followed reports quoting agents who criticized last-minute travel demands involving Vance and his family, prompting concerns that sensitive operational information may have been exposed.

The development came after six agents faced disciplinary measures over the security failures surrounding the Butler shooting. It has contributed to a turbulent period for director Sean Curran as he works to restore confidence in an agency dealing with repeated lapses and internal distrust.

The suspensions took effect in February 2025 but were not publicly disclosed until five months later.

Curran, a longtime member of Trump’s protective detail, helped shield the President during the Butler attack. Trump later personally chose him to lead the Secret Service.

Since taking charge, Curran has sought to strengthen training, modernize equipment and improve coordination with local police while increasing accountability for security breakdowns.

The agency has also recorded notable successes. In April, agents stopped an armed man before he could reach the ballroom where Trump was attending the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Two months later, the Secret Service joined the FBI and other law enforcement agencies in disrupting an alleged drone-and-sniper plot targeting the UFC Freedom 250 event at the White House.
