There’s no denying that Steven Spielberg‘s Disclosure Day is in a league of its own. However, with a couple of box-office underperformers in the last few years, even Spielberg needs all the help that he can get. Disclosure Day is about two weeks from release, but it seems like the promotional campaign has only just begun. A campaign of this duration is usually only deployed in service of a major streaming release. Theatrical tentpoles tend to be marketed like Universal’s The Odyssey. Directed by Christopher Nolan, The Odyssey‘s marketing campaign began well before Disclosure Day, with Nolan even being made available for interviews. However, it seems like the universe is conspiring in Spielberg’s favor nonetheless.
Earlier this year, the Pentagon released the so-called “UFO Files” to the public — video evidence of unidentified flying objects, or, as they are now known, Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena. The government has been quite eager to release these “secret documents” available to the public, and this campaign has only increased interest in Spielberg’s movie, which deals with the exact same idea. Some months ago, further speculation was fueled by a fringe documentary that briefly became a home-video sensation. Titled The Age of Disclosure, the film featured numerous people who claimed to have worked in departments dedicated to the study of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena. The movie was trashed by critics, but it now holds a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Netflix Has the Ideal Lean-In for ‘Disclosure Day’
Less than a month before the release of Disclosure Day, Netflix released perhaps the most powerful reminder of why everyone loves Spielberg: the sci-fi series The Boroughs. The eight-episode show takes the kind of characters that became synonymous with Spielberg’s sci-fi movies from back in the day, ages them up by several decades, and throws them into a new adventure like the ones they used to have as children. The Boroughs is executive-produced by the Duffer Brothers, who famously mimicked the Spielberg aesthetic in their magnum opus, Stranger Things. Their new show has emerged as a massive hit with more than 5.5 million views in its first three days, no doubt benefiting from an excellent 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
According to FlixPatrol, The Boroughs is currently the number one show on the streamer both domestically and worldwide. It’s the ideal lead-in for Disclosure Day, which arrives on June 12. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
