As one of the original child stars of Little House on the Prairie, Patrick Labyorteaux is closely associated with wholesome plots, family values and uplifting television moments.
That image has left fans stunned after discovering that the actor behind Andrew Garvey also appeared in one of television’s most harrowing murders.
Labyorteaux, now 61, rose to fame playing Jonathan and Alice Garvey’s spirited son from 1977 to 1981. Decades later, he made a very different mark on TV history with a guest role during the acclaimed fourth season of Dexter in 2009.
The actor featured prominently in the fifth episode, Dirty Harry, where his character was brutally killed by John Lithgow’s sadistic Trinity Killer as Dexter Morgan, played by Michael C. Hall, watched helplessly.
Trinity first draws Dexter’s attention after retired FBI Special Agent Frank Lundy, who previously led the hunt for the Bay Harbor Butcher, returns to Miami to investigate the apparent suicide of a young woman found in a bathtub.
Lundy, played by Keith Carradine, explains that he is tracking a meticulous murderer whose crimes follow a pattern of three: a young woman with her femoral artery severed in a bath, a married mother of two pushed from a building and a father of two beaten to death.

Fans of the NBC series were stunned to learn that Patrick Labyorteaux, known for playing Andrew Garvey, appeared in one of television’s most brutal murders in 2009, during season four of Dexter.
Labyorteaux plays Earl Doorman, an unassuming sandwich shop manager working in a mostly vacant office building. He first encounters Trinity when the killer poses as a prospective tenant.
Although many viewers suspect that security guard Benson, played by Christopher Varga, will become Trinity’s next victim, the mild-mannered Earl is ultimately revealed to be the murderer’s real target.
When Earl meets Trinity and Benson earlier that day, he cheerfully says: “Right on schedule and you brought me a customer!”
He then offers Mitchell a coffee, asking: “Can I top you off?”
With a smirk, Trinity replies: “No thanks, caffeine makes me a different person. Appreciate the offer though.”
Dexter knows only that Trinity’s next victim will be a middle-aged father of two, chosen to recreate the bludgeoning death of Trinity’s own father. He also identifies the likely location for the next murder.
Hours later, Dexter tries to intervene but cannot find Trinity in time. In a stock room, Earl is attacked as he screams for help.
Labyorteaux took center stage in the fifth episode, Dirty Harry, when his character was murdered by John Lithgow’s depraved Trinity Killer as a horrified Dexter, played by Michael C. Hall, looked on.
In the disturbing sequence, Trinity beats coffee shop worker Earl to death.
As Trinity crushes his kneecaps with a hammer, Earl cries: “Please stop! I’m a father!”
Patrick later appears as a decomposing corpse while Miami Metro investigates Earl’s murder at 100 Oceangate in the episode Remains to Be Seen.

As Trinity smashes his kneecaps with a hammer, Earl tearfully pleads: “Please stop! I’m a father!”
Trinity snarls: “You were no father. You made me… you made me do this!” He then strikes Earl in the head at least six times, killing him.
Dexter watches the attack from the security room but cannot reach Trinity before the killing is complete.
Michael C. Hall and James Remar were seen filming the second season of Dexter: Resurrection in New York City earlier this year. The season premieres on October 30.
Labyorteaux appears again as a decomposing corpse while Miami Metro detectives investigate the murder at 100 Oceangate in Remains to Be Seen.
Despite his lengthy acting career, Labyorteaux’s guest role was uncredited in both episodes. His name also does not appear in the cast listings alongside guest stars including Courtney Ford and Jeff Leaf.
The revelation surprised fans, with one reacting: “No way!” Another wrote: “I never knew this.”
Little House on the Prairie was also a family affair for Labyorteaux. His younger brother, Matthew Labyorteaux, now 59, played Albert Quinn Ingalls.
With both Dexter and Little House on the Prairie returning to the spotlight through new projects, interest in the Labyorteaux brothers has surged once again.
Matthew joined Little House on the Prairie partway through its run as the Ingalls family’s adopted son, Albert, and quickly became a favorite among viewers.
Matthew joined the series as adopted son Albert and quickly became one of its most popular characters.
Matthew continues to act and write screenplays. He also founded the online acting school Working Actors School, pictured in 2024.
Season two of Dexter: Resurrection, starring Michael C. Hall and Uma Thurman, premieres on October 30.
Albert’s storylines included some of the show’s most dramatic arcs, including a powerful addiction storyline in the later seasons. The plot was considered groundbreaking television at the time, while Matthew Labyorteaux’s performance earned widespread praise.
Over the years, he has spoken fondly about his time on the series, describing the cast as a true family and saying the experience helped shape the person he became.
He remains a much-loved figure among the show’s devoted fanbase.
Matthew continues to work as an actor and screenwriter and has also launched the online Working Actors School.
Speaking about the course, he said: “You don’t have to be in Hollywood, and that’s kind of the way the industry is now. It’s for adults, it’s for kids, and we have different classes for different age groups. It’s a great school if you’re looking to start out.”
