Chrissy Metz has opened up about her health journey, revealing that weight training has become her latest fitness focus after losing an astonishing 100 pounds.
The 44-year-old actress, best known for playing Kate Pearson on This Is Us, has long advocated for body positivity. Her character was a plus-size woman navigating weight, self-esteem and complex personal struggles.
In an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com, Metz discussed whether she plans to lose more weight and addressed the possibility of taking Ozempic, the diabetes medication that has become a major topic in Hollywood because of its weight-loss effects.
These days, Metz said, she has been committed to something “new” in her routine: lifting weights.
“I have always enjoyed strength training. I’ve always enjoyed lifting weights. I don’t want to run unless I’m being chased,” she said while promoting her second children’s book, When I Talk to God, I Talk About Feelings.

The actress previously said she lost the weight by following a 2,000-calorie diet and walking for 20 minutes a day (pictured in 2019)
She said she has recently stayed consistent with weight lifting under the guidance of her personal trainer.
Metz lives in Nashville, where she works with a trainer who has gone through his own weight-loss journey. That shared experience is one reason she values their partnership.
“We have things in common, so it’s not just like, ‘Why are you doing this?’ I don’t want to be yelled at. I want to be lovingly supported in whatever it is that I’m doing,” she said.
Beyond the one-on-one sessions, Metz is motivated by the long-term benefits of exercise and the role it can play as she gets older.
“I want to age the best way that I can, and I want to be strong. And that’s really the impetus behind any of it,” she said.
“I’m literally doing it because I am nervous about aging, about osteoporosis or arthritis, you know. They’re discovering so much about health overall, and it’s really about being and staying strong and flexible.”
Her workouts vary depending on her schedule. But when she becomes interested in something—whether gardening, painting or woodworking—she said she likes to go “ham,” committing fully while making progress a little at a time each day.
Asked about Ozempic, which several high-profile stars have discussed publicly, Metz told DailyMail.com that the decision is deeply personal.

“It’s something I feel like is so personal. And sure, I think it’s important to destigmatize anything,” she said.
“But I also think it’s people’s personal decision to decide what they want to do for their body. Ultimately, at the end of the day, we all just want to feel good and feel good about ourselves.”
She added: “If you’re not hurting anybody, and you’re not hurting yourself, you should do what you feel is right for your body or your mind or whatever.”
Metz said she tries to treat people as she would like to be treated and does not consider herself judgmental.
Fans have previously asked whether she would consider gastric bypass surgery, particularly because her This Is Us character, Kate, considered the procedure on the show. Metz has said that question is one she dislikes being asked.
The Florida native insists she has “never” had weight-loss surgery and suggested that she may not pursue surgery in the future.
“I don’t even take Tylenol. I really am such a weirdo that way. I’m like, ‘Yeah, no.’”
“I mean, whatever is best for the person. But for me, with bariatric surgery, so much of my food issues personally are psychological. You could sort of put a Band-Aid on the problem,” she explained. “But what’s the bigger issue? There’s a bigger issue for me.”
“It wouldn’t take with me. I could eat past it. With anything, it’s a lifestyle change.”

Metz has previously said that she gained more than 100 pounds while experiencing depression about eight years ago. At 30, a “crazy panic attack” led to a hospitalization and prompted her to make changes.
“All I did was eat a 2,000-calorie diet and walk 20 minutes a day,” she previously said of losing the 100 pounds in less than five months.
In her latest interview, she said, “Ultimately, it was because I was unhappy and I wasn’t pursuing my career, and I was, you know, very stifled.
“And I was in a marriage [with ex Martyn Eaden] that had a lot of love, but it wasn’t the right person. So that was like a whole different situation.”
Metz also revealed that she is happy in a new relationship, although she has chosen not to disclose her boyfriend’s name for now.
“It’s so great. It’s been amazing. It’s been really, really wonderful,” she said, adding that she has been dating the non-celebrity for “almost a year.”
Explaining why she has kept the relationship private, Metz said: “You learn from other choices that you’ve made, and my therapist is a very big proponent of thinking that social media is the worst thing you can do for relationships.”
“I mean, to each his own. But for me it’s like, ‘What is my intention?’ Everything I do is, ‘What is my intention? Do I need to let people know I’m in a relationship?’ No.”
The actress told DailyMail.com that she wrote her second children’s book with ex Bradley Collins while they were ending their relationship. They remain “friendly” today
“In any other world, 50 years ago, before social media existed, you probably dated somebody you met at the local grocery store or went to school with, and you didn’t parade them around.”
She continued: “It’s just so interesting what our society really is about. I’m just doing things differently than I’ve done before.”
Metz was married to British journalist Martyn Eaden from 2008 until they separated in 2013. Their divorce was finalized in 2015.
She later dated This Is Us cameraman Josh Stancil from 2016 to 2018, followed by a two-year relationship with composer Hal Rosenfeld.
Her most recent former partner was singer-songwriter Bradley Collins, whom she met on a dating app. The pair announced their split in October 2023.
Collins co-authored Metz’s children’s book, When I Talk to God, I Talk About Feelings, which hits bookshelves on April 8.
Illustrated by Lisa Fields, the picture book is part of the New York Times bestselling series When I Talk to God, I Talk About You. It explores how children can use faith and prayer to process the highs and lows of their emotions.
Metz said she and Collins were completing the book when they decided to end their relationship.
Metz promoted her new book on Instagram: “Less than two weeks away from the debut of ‘When I Talk to God, I Talk About Feelings.’ It’s the second picture book in our children’s series and navigates little ones’ big feelings with faith and prayer. I simply can’t wait for this to be in the world. Pre-order your copy now”

“It was interesting, like, ‘How will we navigate this?’” And they did, she said, noting that they remain on good terms. “Luckily, we’re friendly, so it’s not awkward. Being creative, you want to see the project through, and we were so close to almost being finished. I think we actually handed in our last draft the weekend we decided to part ways.”
The Bank of Dave 2 star said the book’s focus on emotions made the timing especially meaningful, as the former couple was “grappling with our feelings” while completing it.
“I was like, ‘We can be friends and friendly, even if we’re not supposed to be together forever,’” she said, adding that she has generally remained friendly with the people she has dated.
Alongside promoting her new book, Metz recently wrapped a film in Africa called Last Day in Paradise, which centers on the 2018 Paradise Fires. She is also awaiting the release of the thriller The Hunting Wives, starring Dermot Mulroney, Malin Akerman and Brittany Snow.
Following the success of This Is Us—whose sixth and final season aired in May 2022—Metz said new opportunities have emerged. Still, she is especially interested in taking on more comedy roles.
“I think people are like, ‘Oh, you’re funny.’ And I’m like, ‘You just think I’m the girl who cries a lot on TV.’ I hope some comedy stuff comes down the pike,” she said.
She is also developing a one-woman show combining stand-up comedy, original music and her personal story—“my whole journey,” as she put it.
