Matt Damon and David Letterman delivered a fleeting surprise in the season four premiere of The Gilded Age on Sunday.
The 56-year-old actor and 79-year-old television icon appeared for just six seconds in the HBO period drama, making their cameo at approximately the 8:33 mark.
Dressed as elegant 19th-century gentlemen, the pair crossed a New York street in a short, dialogue-free scene.
Their transformation was nearly enough to conceal their identities, thanks to elaborate facial hair, formal vintage clothing and period-appropriate hats.
Damon sported dark gray sideburns and a thick mustache, a striking departure from his familiar salt-and-pepper stubble and carefully styled hair.
The Odyssey star recently showed off a rare clean-shaven appearance at a red carpet event supporting longtime friend and business partner Ben Affleck, whose new crime thriller Animals was being promoted.

Letterman, meanwhile, appeared to be wearing his own full beard and mustache, neatly trimmed for the occasion.
Known for his wide-ranging collection of eyewear, the longtime late-night host completed the look with understated round glasses featuring slim silver frames.
Damon wore a white shirt and ascot beneath a long coat, with tailored trousers completing his costume.
A top hat finished Damon’s outfit, while Letterman wore a bowler hat with his otherwise all-black ensemble.
The unlikely duo looked every inch the debonair gentlemen as they stepped into the historical drama’s depiction of 1880s New York during America’s Gilded Age.
New episodes of season four of The Gilded Age will premiere on Sundays and stream on HBO.
Letterman’s Netflix interview series, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, is also preparing to return for season seven, with Damon set to appear as a guest.
Isabel Richardson, a showrunner on the talk show, recently explained how the unexpected The Gilded Age cameo came together.

Speaking to Vulture, Richardson said the idea emerged while the team was preparing for Damon’s upcoming appearance on Letterman’s Netflix program.
During their research, they learned that Damon began his career as a background actor. That discovery inspired the team to suggest that he and Letterman take on background roles together.
“It’d be really fun for Dave to do this with Academy Award winner Matt Damon, and it tied into his origin story really well,” Richardson told the publication.
The production presented Damon with several possible field-segment concepts, but Richardson said he “unequivocally chose this idea as his favorite. And this was, by far, the silliest, most ridiculous idea.”
While researching productions shooting in New York at the same time as My Next Guest, a line producer connected the team with a friend working on The Gilded Age, opening the door for discussions.
The Gilded Age executive producer Kate Churchill recalled being amused when the unusual request reached her.
“It was a kind of a hysterical moment when our production supervisor Leah Baker came up to me on set and was like, ‘Well, I have a kind of funny, interesting question. Would you like Dave Letterman and Matt Damon to be background on our set one day?’ I just started laughing.”
HBO executives reportedly loved the concept, allowing the production team to work out how the two stars could be incorporated as background performers.

Richardson said the scene was filmed on a closed set and structured carefully to give it the best chance of appearing in the finished episode.
“The only way I could think of was if we did it in a very controlled manner and it was a shot that we needed, so there was a high chance of it making the cut,” she explained.
The production still had to navigate complicated scheduling issues, as well as arranging payment for Damon as a background actor through his own company, but the cameo ultimately went ahead.
Richardson remembered Letterman as being “a kid in a candy shop,” excited and curious about every aspect of the set.
Damon was equally entertained. According to Richardson, he laughed so much that he had to hold his mustache in place whenever he broke into a smile.
“It really was one of those rare moments in our business where everyone’s having a lot of fun doing something special, and there was this great authenticity to it that felt very specific to these two shows,” Churchill said.
Netflix has not yet announced a premiere date for season seven of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman. The four-episode season is expected to arrive later this year.
