DeVante Swing is best known as the creative leader, main producer, and principal songwriter of the R&B group Jodeci. A founding member of the group alongside his brother Mr. Dalvin and the Hailey brothers K-Ci and JoJo, DeVante helped build one of the most influential R&B sounds of the 1990s. His production blended gospel harmony, hip-hop drums, new jack swing, lush keyboards, dark atmospheres, and sexually direct songwriting. Early Life

DeVante Swing was born Donald Earle DeGrate Jr. on September 29, 1969, in Hampton, Virginia. He was raised in a musical family and grew up partly in North Carolina. His younger brother, Dalvin DeGrate, later became known professionally as Mr. Dalvin.

As a teenager, DeVante became obsessed with music production, songwriting, and performance. One of the most famous stories from his early life involves traveling to Minneapolis as a teenager in hopes of getting work with Prince at Paisley Park. The effort did not lead to a job, but it pushed him to keep developing his own sound.

Formation of Jodeci

DeVante first began building Jodeci with JoJo Hailey before the group expanded to include K-Ci Hailey and Mr. Dalvin. The four members combined two major strengths: the Hailey brothers’ explosive gospel-trained vocals and the DeGrate brothers’ production, writing, and image-building instincts.

After landing a deal with Uptown Records, Jodeci released “Forever My Lady” in 1991. DeVante was central to the album’s sound, helping write and produce records that felt romantic but rhythmically harder than much of mainstream R&B at the time. The album produced the #1 R&B hits “Forever My Lady,” “Stay,” and “Come and Talk to Me,” and it became a multi-platinum success.

Production Style and Jodeci’s Peak

DeVante’s production style was one of Jodeci’s most important weapons. He used thick drums, moody keyboards, layered harmonies, spoken interludes, and dramatic arrangements to create songs that sounded intimate and cinematic at the same time.

On “Diary of a Mad Band,” released in 1993, DeVante helped push Jodeci into a darker and more experimental direction. Songs such as “Cry for You,” “Feenin’,” and “What About Us” showed how far the group could stretch the boundaries of contemporary R&B without losing commercial appeal.

He remained a major force on 1995’s “The Show, the After Party, the Hotel,” writing and producing “Freek’n You,” one of Jodeci’s most famous songs. The album reached #2 on the Billboard 200 and became the group’s third straight platinum studio album.

Swing Mob

DeVante’s broader influence grew through Swing Mob, also known as Da Bassment Cru. The collective brought together young singers, rappers, producers, writers, and engineers, many of whom later became major figures.

Swing Mob’s most famous alumni include Missy Elliott and Timbaland. Missy had been part of the group Sista when she came into DeVante’s orbit, and Timbaland followed as her producer and collaborator. Ginuwine, Magoo, Playa, Static Major, Tweet, Stevie J, and Jimmy Douglass were also connected to the collective.

Not every Swing Mob project was released, and the operation eventually unraveled. But its influence was massive. The creative relationships formed there fed directly into the next era of R&B and hip-hop, including the rise of Timbaland and Missy Elliott, Ginuwine’s “Pony,” Aaliyah’s “One in a Million” era, and a more futuristic approach to rhythm and vocal production.

Later Career

After Jodeci’s mid-1990s peak, DeVante became less publicly visible. K-Ci and JoJo launched a successful duo career, while many Swing Mob alumni became stars in their own right. DeVante continued to receive production and writing credits and remained connected to Jodeci reunions.

In 2015, Jodeci released “The Past, the Present, the Future,” the group’s first album in 20 years. DeVante was part of the reunion, and the album served as a reminder of how much of modern R&B’s DNA could be traced back to the group’s original sound.
