A man who murdered his ex-girlfriend as she was on date with another man and filmed selfie video next to her as she lay dying has been jailed for life

A man who murdered his ex-girlfriend after she began dating someone else and then took a selfie video next to her as she lay dying has been jailed for life.

Ukrainian Yurii Muzyka, 34, stabbed 29-year-old Halyna Hoisan at her apartment in Greenwich, London, on the evening of August 27 last year. Their daughter was in the next room at the time.

Muzyka, of New Malden, was allowed entry to the block of flats by a neighbour and forced his way into the flat, where he found Ms Hoisan with Yanis Djebli, who she was dating.

He stabbed Ms Hoisan six times to the chest before taking photographs of her in a pool of blood and stabbing himself in the stomach.

In hospital after the killing Muzyka wrote on a whiteboard: ‘I can’t believe my partner have sex with another boy’.

Judge Simon Mayo, KC, jailed him for life with a minimum term of 30 years. 

Muzyka was subject to a non-molestation order forbidding him from contacting Ms Hoisan after conducting in controlling and coercive behaviour and threatening to kill her, the court heard. The order was issued just a week before she was killed. 

Before the murder Muzyka made videos saying he could not forgive her for ‘her behaviour’ and called her a ‘b***’ and a ‘w***e’.

He denied but was convicted of murdering Ms Hoisan, who was also originally from Ukraine.  

The judge said: ‘Halyna was only 29 years old when you murdered her in a planned and sustained knife attack in her own home.

‘Shortly beforehand, you conducted internet searches directed at identifying the most vulnerable areas of the human body, including the chest.

‘Nothing in your conduct before me or during the trial indicates genuine remorse.

‘I am sure your actions were driven by jealously, resentment and determination to exert control over Halyna even after the relationship had come to an end.

‘You went to her home with a knife and metal chisel. You approached with stealth and gained entry to the building by subterfuge and forced you way into her flat.

‘What followed was immediate and purposeful. You called Halyna a b**** and then without hesitation moved directly towards her and began your attack.

‘After inflicting those injuries you photographed her as she lay dying. You also recorded a video in which you briefly spoke about what had occurred. In the background, Halyna could be heard in the final moments of her life.

‘That is a detail of incalculable and enduring distress for her family.’

Ms Hosain’s mother, Svitlana Hoisan, sobbed as she read her victim impact statement in court in Ukrainian.

She then put her written statement down and turned and made an impassioned speech directly to Muzyka, who wept in the dock as he heard her words.

The Ukrainian interpreter in court confirmed that what she had said was not contained in her victim impact statement but her words were not translated in court.

In the written statement, she said: ‘The death of my daughter had a profound impact on me, I cannot comprehend how one person could do something like this to another human being – it is beyond my understanding.

‘Haylyna was my only child and the closest person to me. We spoke several times every day. She was a kind, caring, strong woman.

‘On that day my life was destroyed forever. It is very difficult to put into words the pain that I feel every day. I wake up and go to sleep thinking about my daughter.

‘I still cannot believe she is gone. I cannot think about how much she suffered and the fear she must have experienced before her death.’

Prosecutor Jacob Hallam, KC, said: ‘On the evening of 27 August 2025, Yurii Muzyka travelled to a flat in Greenwich, armed with a knife.

‘It was where Halyna Hoisan lived. Ms Hoisan was Mr Muzyka’s ex-partner. Mr Muzyka forced his way into Ms Hoisan’s flat, and then attacked her.

‘A man called Yanis Djebli, who was with Halyna, tried to help and then ran to call the police when the defendant began stabbing her as she lay on the floor.

‘The defendant stabbed Halyna Hoisan to death, took photos of her as she lay in a growing pool of her own blood, and then stabbed himself in the stomach.

‘The medical services, the first of whom arrived in response to Yanis Djebli’s call, they could not heal the many wounds the defendant had caused to Halyna, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

‘But they could heal the single wound the defendant inflicted on himself. And so he can be tried by you for her murder.’

Mr Hallam said the couple had been in a ‘turbulent’ relationship.

After it ended, Ms Hoisan moved out of the family home and made allegations against Muzyka for violence and stalking while he made counter-claims against her to police, the court heard.

Ms Hoisan gained a non-molestation order against Muzyka last August after he made threats to kill, it was said.

Ms Hosain went on a date with Mr Djebli on August 25 and they went for a walk in Greenwich.

Two days later, at 4.53pm, Muzyka bought a knife from Lakeland in Kingston, jurors heard.

In a video found on his phone, he said: ‘Hello Mum. Probably I am filming my last video, because I can’t do it anymore.

‘She sleeps around, she goes God knows where, f***s around, drinks until morning.

‘She’s just a f***ing w***e, she hurt me very badly. She’s just a b****’.

Mr Djebli said Muzyka looked like he was ‘on a mission’ as he stabbed Ms Hoisan while she lay on the floor in the foetal position.

‘Yanis Djebli ran from the flat,’ said Mr Hallam.

‘On the ground floor he saw two females and told them to get out and to call the police. They did so, and he and they spoke to the police, telling them that someone was being attacked with a knife in the flat.’

On Muzyka’s phone images of spyware and masks were found along with 186 images of the chest and heart and 261 images of knives.

In a victim impact statement Mr Djebli said he struggled to eat, sleep or work after the incident.

‘Everything has changed,’ he said.

Rupert Bowers, KC, defending, said: ‘He has no family in this country. He likely will receive no visits from them. He perhaps hasn’t fully reached a point of realisation at the enormity of what has happened at his hand.’

Muzyka denied but was convicted of murder and possession of a knife.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Franklin, whose team led the investigation, said: ‘Halyna’s murder was an appalling act of cruelty. Muzyka robbed a child of her devoted mother and parents of a loving daughter.

‘Detectives worked tirelessly to bring Muzyka to justice and the successful conviction highlights the Met’s commitment to bringing dangerous men to justice and tackling violence against women and girls.’
