Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence.
The trade rumors surrounding New York Giants star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and the Chicago Bears won’t stop until there’s either a resolution between Lawrence and New York, or the Giants trade him away.
Neither situation has happened. In fact, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport provided a huge update on the extension talks between Lawrence and the Giants, saying that they have reached an “impasse.”
“The #Giants and star DL Dexter Lawrence, who have been talking about a new big-money extension, have reached an impasse, sources say. The Giants have engaged with teams on a potential trade and that will continue. It should come to a head before the Draft.”
An impasse is essentially a situation in which no progress is possible.

Rapoport provided some more context to his tweet.
“By the time the Draft arrives, the #Giants should gain a full understanding of league-wide interest in Dexter Lawrence, allowing them to make an all-important decision on his future and theirs.”
Not only that, but general manager Joe Schoen told reporters on Tuesday that, “I’ll echo what coach said last week. We’d like for Dexter to be here, and at some point we’ll come to a resolution here, whatever that may be. We’ll see.”
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler also added some input to Rapoport’s report.
“What helps Lawrence’s trade value, aside from his status as a premier player: It’s a weaker DT draft class. Teams that need an upgrade will likely jump on this.”
The Bears, despite being dead last in the NFL in available cap space, can figure out a way to make a trade for Lawrence work. At least, that’s the hope.
ESPN’s Matt Miller is even tipping his hat on the Bears trading for Lawrence, commenting under Fowler’s quote on Rapoport’s post, “Bears, anyone?”
More on Lawrence
The Bears had an obvious need at defensive line, and Lawrence is worth trading for. Plus, the price for acquiring Lawrence might be cheaper than some folks think.
Connor Hughes, an insider who covers the Giants and Jets, believes the potential offers the Giants are looking for Lawrence could include the following:
- A late 2026 1st round pick
- A 2027 1st round pick
- A 2nd and 5th round pick
The Bears have the requirements for any of the three options, but with Fowler noting that the combination of a weak DT draft class and multiple NFL teams having a need at that position, it could be a little more than what Hughes initially said back on April 6th.
Regardless, it appears Lawrence could be a draft-day trade.
Do the Bears go out and trade away premium draft capital for an elite 28-year-old defensive tackle who’s looking to make $30 million plus per year, or does general manager Ryan Poles opt for the cheaper route while saving draft capital?
There’s a personal belief that Poles, along with pretty much every other GM in the NFL, has some level of interest in trading for Lawrence. The biggest hurdle teams are likely contemplating over isn’t the draft capital needed to make a trade; it’s the money that Lawrence is asking for.
