Running socks don’t get the same prestige and treatment as running trainers, running glasses or gym leggings but choose the right pair and the miles suddenly feel so much easier.
The best running socks should sit snugly over the foot, dry quickly, stop blisters and wick sweat away so you can focus on your run – not on how your feet feel.
I’ve been testing some of the most popular running socks available right now – wearing them on short jogs, long runs, treadmill sessions and everyday walks.
Rather than just trying them on once to get a feel for them, I’ve washed them repeatedly, worn them again and paid close attention to comfort, sweat control and durability.
Pair these socks with a decent running trainer such as the Nike Vomero Plus or the Brooks Glycerin 23 – both of which we recently reviewed – and you’ve got a recipe for running success.
Best running socks: Quick list
How we test
I tested each pair during real runs – short jogs, longer steady sessions and faster workouts – as well as everyday walking. I paid close attention to comfort, fit, sweat control and whether they stayed in place.
Each pair was washed multiple times and worn again to see how they held up, as durability matters just as much as performance.
If you’re investing in running socks, these are the ones that genuinely stood out – for comfort, value and performance where it counts most.

The best running socks to buy now
These were the socks I reached for on longer runs when comfort mattered most. The cushioning underfoot is noticeable without feeling bulky, and the fabric feels soft the moment you pull them on.
I particularly liked the padded heel and toe, which helped reduce pressure during longer sessions, while the mesh ventilation panels kept my feet from overheating. The crew length sits nicely above the ankle and didn’t slip down at any point – even after multiple washes.
They also look far more stylish than most running socks, which is a bonus if you care about your kit matching.

2. Best everyday running sock: Asics Cushion Run Quarter Sock
These became my go-to socks for everyday training. They’re simple, affordable and do exactly what you want a running sock to do.
The quarter length gives ankle coverage without feeling too warm, and the cushioning at the heel and toe provides just enough comfort for daily runs. I found they fitted snugly without squeezing, and they stayed put even on faster sessions.
They’re not flashy, but they’re reliable – the sort of socks you’ll happily throw on without thinking twice.

3. Best lightweight running sock: Adidas RUNxADIZERO Socks
If you like socks that feel barely there, these are hard to beat. I wore these on faster runs and tempo sessions, and they felt incredibly light and breathable.
The fabric manages sweat well, keeping my feet cool even when pushing the pace. There’s light cushioning around the toes, but overall they’re designed for speed rather than comfort padding – which will suit some runners more than others.
They’re a great choice for races or warm weather running when you want minimal distractions.

4. Best running sock for blister prevention: 1000 Mile Women’s Fusion Socklet Repreve
These stood out immediately thanks to their double-layer design, which is specifically made to reduce friction. I wore them on longer runs where blisters are usually a concern, and they performed impressively.
The inner layer moves with your foot while the outer layer moves with the shoe, helping prevent rubbing. Padding at the heel and ball of the foot adds comfort without making them feel bulky.
They did take a moment to get used to – especially when pulling them on – but once on, they felt secure and protective.

Verdict
My favourite pair of socks from this list has to be the Asics Cushion Run socks. They were really good for every day training, something I spend most of my time doing, but might not be ideal for sports or runs that require your feet to go the distance, as there’s little padding. For that, I’d suggest the 1000 Mile socks with double padding.
Those who find their feet get too hot during workouts will benefit from the Adidas RUNxADIZERO socks. Their lightweight design is comfortable and breathable but offers less protection against blisters.

FAQs
What material is best for running socks?
Most running socks are made from synthetic fibres rather than cotton – and for good reason, as pure cotton socks absorb sweat and stay wet, which increases the risk of blisters.
The highest-rated running socks tend to use blends of nylon, polyester and elastane, often with merino wool added for temperature control.
Synthetic fibres help wick moisture away from the foot, dry quickly and retain their shape. Merino wool blends are especially popular in colder weather, with runners praising their ability to regulate temperature and reduce odour without feeling bulky.
Do running socks really prevent blisters?
Good running socks can make a noticeable difference. Socks with seamless toes, reinforced heels and arch compression are frequently credited with reducing friction – the main cause of blisters.
Thicker cushioning around pressure points can also help on longer runs, while thinner socks are often preferred for speed sessions. Many reviewers stress that fit is key: a sock that’s too loose or too tight is far more likely to cause rubbing, no matter how technical the fabric.
