A woman who grew up poor has revealed how she’s been living as if nothing ever changed after secretly becoming a millionaire overnight.
Despite her windfall, the lottery winner said she still picks up extra shifts at a job she hates and drives for Uber part-time, with no one suspecting she has won a fortune.
After becoming a millionaire six months ago, she has been living a normal life, and quietly paying for her family’s groceries and rent.
‘I came from a poor family and we used to stress about money constantly. I still haven’t told anyone, and everyone thinks my life changed because I started working really hard,’ the woman said in a Reddit thread.
‘I started picking up more shifts and working harder, and I bought a car for my family and myself. They’re worried I’ll have to pay it monthly, but I actually bought a small Hyundai for $30,000 and paid it all at once.’
On top of her shift work, the woman – who earns a salary of about $2,850 every month – has been driving for Uber part-time.
‘Nothing in my life really has changed that much,’ she explained.
‘I still buy my shampoo from the dollar store.’

With her lottery winnings, she hopes to buy a nice home for her family and travel the world.
‘I also want my mum to be able to retire. I want us to stop living in government housing and just have a decent, comfortable life,’ she said.
‘I don’t want to stress so much about work anymore. These are just the things I’ve been writing down and they’re not necessarily very practical, but I know I need to start investing my money more wisely.’
The woman said the reason she hasn’t told her family is that they have always been financially irresponsible.
‘I love my family a lot, but none of us are really wise when it comes to money. I see how my family can go through their whole salary buying random stuff online every two weeks,’ she said.
‘I feel like we need financial literacy before I tell them anything.’
The woman said she’s been playing the lottery over the past three years.
‘I was really ashamed to tell anyone because I used to think it was just for ‘idiots’. I even felt like I was being one for playing it and just losing money without ever winning anything,’ she explained.
‘So I’d only play once every month or two months.’

For now, she said her main priority is her family.
‘You won’t believe me but I haven’t bought anything nice for myself yet,’ she said.
‘I love my family a lot, and when I got that money I was just thinking about how I could help them financially and maybe make it so they don’t have to work again.
‘I do feel a bit bad sometimes because I’m not really thinking about myself at all and I still have the job that I hate and I’m working so hard.
‘I was so scared when I won. I still don’t really know what to do with it. I think I’m just in denial because I haven’t told anyone, so I keep catching myself thinking it’s not even real.’
Her post was met with 2,300 comments – with many urging her to ‘never tell a soul’ about her lottery win – including her own family.

Is it selfish or smart to hide a lottery win from your family and keep living as if nothing changed?
‘Not even your mother. Do not tell anyone. Make s*** up. Tell them you have been investing and one of your stocks went crazy. Tell them anything that isn’t you winning the lottery,’ one warned.
‘It’s your money. Don’t tell a soul. Be generous when and where you want to be and can be without hurting your own future. People are leeches. Once word gets out, you will not have peace until you are broke,’ another shared.
‘For the love of all that is holy DON’T TELL ANYONE! Never ever, not a soul… not even your shadow. Do not tell anyone… ever,’ one revealed.
‘Don’t tell anyone. Be as generous as you want, after you are assured that the you of 2076 is well prepared for,’ another added.
