Kylie Minogue was sent down memory lane while working on the Netflix documentary about her life – and drew closer to her ex-boyfriend Jason Donovan in the process.

The pair played onscreen lovers Charlene and Scott Robinson in the Aussie soap Neighbours, and went on to date in real life for three years, before splitting in 1989.

And the Australian singer and her former co-star bonded over sharing videos and photos from their past during the production of the new special, Kylie told The Sydney Morning Herald this week.

When asked if she and Aussie actor Jason, 58, were ‘good mates’ these days, the 58-year-old replied: ‘Yeah, yeah, we are.’

The pop star continued: ‘I’ve texted him some doozies while I was looking through all the old photos and video footage of us together.

‘I told him he better start collecting things for his doco.’

Kylie also discussed how the romance between the former couple sparked up only after their characters found love on the show.

‘We fancied each other. The love story in the show came first and then it became a real thing,’ she said.

The Locomotion hitmaker recalled how watching her new documentary, called Kylie, with her family, led to some moving moments as she looked back at her romance with Jason.

‘It was so emotional watching it with them,’ she explained.

‘When the clip of Scott and Charlene kissing came up, my nephew turned round to me and said, “Oh, that was quite the kiss!”‘

Jason was on hand at the premiere of her Netflix documentary in London late last month.

The iconic songstress looked delighted to be reunited with the now London-based actor as they cosied up on the red carpet.

The documentary includes shared never-before-seen home video footage of Kylie with Jason in their youth.

Jason is also shown admitting that he was jealous of Kylie’s success.

Things soured between the pair after Kylie launched a commercially successful singing career but struggled with the criticism she faced.

Jason reflected: ‘She really struggled and I was like, “well, maybe you shouldn’t have gone down that route…” because that’s how my attitude was.

‘Her music career at that point had really taken off. It didn’t p**s me off but it was like… We’d been this partnership in the show and suddenly I could see she was moving away from her acting.

‘So there were a few arguments. I had my own ego at that point “why isn’t this happening to me?” you know what I mean.’

Home video footage of the pair in the early days of their romance showed fresh-faced Kylie rolling around in bed giggling, as Jason filmed her.

Kylie previously admitted she had forgotten about the clips’ existence until Netflix producers were able to track them down.

‘When I saw that footage for the first time, my heart swelled. I thought, “Oh my God, we were just babies”,’ she said.

‘That brought back tidal waves of nostalgia, emotion and a lot of love.’
