A24 takes a short break from its horror streak and enters the world of video game adaptations.
A24 is joining forces with Kojima Productions for an adaptation of the award-winning science fiction video game Death Stranding. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the upcoming film’s plot is still shrouded in mystery as the project is still in early development. However, it has been confirmed that the script is nearly complete.
While appearing on IGN Live to promote his upcoming film, The Death of Robin Hood, Michael Sarnoski also provided an update on the highly anticipated Death Stranding screen adaptation he is developing for A24. The director revealed that the screenplay is well underway and revealed that some fan favorite characters might appear in the movie.
Sarnoski said that he has been working closely with Death Stranding’s creator, Hideo Kojima, on the script. He explained that Kojima has already seen the first draft and is currently working on revisions with him and A24. The director stated that all parties involved seemed very happy with the storyline he developed.
According to Sarnoski, Kojima has given him the creative freedom to explore the Death Stranding universe. Similar to Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot, the director wants to make the project his own with original characters and plot points while still respecting the franchise and keeping the elements of the video game that make it a success. However, while the movie will feature mostly new characters, he added that players will see a few figures from the games show up throughout the film in some capacity.
Sarnoski further elaborated that he was grateful for the opportunity to tell an original story with his own characters. He says that it allows him to explore and draw inspiration from his favorite aspects of the franchise. He also assured Death Stranding’s loyal following in the gaming community that his adaptation would fit naturally within the world that Kojima created.
I’m writing the script right now and hopefully almost done with that and really excited to dive into it. I’ve been talking to Kojima and A24 a lot about it. They’ve read a draft. We’re working on some revisions together, and they all seem super excited and happy with it. Kojima has been really generous in letting me play in his world but letting me tell a story with my own characters and my own sort of corner of this world, but keeping it honest to the game and doing something that fans will really like. So it’s been a great process so far, and I’m really excited to share it.
I get to play in this sandbox, but I can have my own characters; I can explore something that’s meaningful to me. I think there are such fundamental themes in Death Stranding about connection and expression, and all of this stuff, that it was easy for me to find a character that made sense in that world that I could really dive into.
Death Stranding is an action-adventure video game. The title is the first project from Kojima Productions since the company cut ties with Konami in 2015. It debuted on PlayStation 4 in November 2019 before making its way to Windows in 2020. A director’s cut was released on PlayStation 5 in 2021. It was later developed for PC, Apple devices, Amazon Luna, and Xbox Series X|S.
The story takes place after Bridget Strand (the president) tried to resurrect her son, Sam. She accidentally merged the world of the living with the Beach, the game’s version of purgatory. As a result, most of the world gets wiped out except for a few survivors. The video game then follows Sam, who tries to deliver essential supplies across the country to the people who are still alive while facing several dangerous creatures and other threats.
There is currently no release date for A24’s Death Stranding at the time of this article’s publication. However, it is expected to premiere in theaters in 2027.
