Anime's Most Underrated 10/10 Thriller Is Finally Returning From Hiatus After 6 Years

It has taken more than a decade, but at last, one of the most underrated anime series is eyeing a comeback. Hiatuses are hardly rare in the world of anime and manga at this point. From brutal production schedules to health scares, plenty of roadblocks can push our favorite series into a break. Back in 2015, this truth was made painfully clear when Kohske’s hit series Gangsta was hit. The thrilling manga went on hiatus with little warning, but that will change soon. Gangsta is slated to return at last, bringing an end to one of the industry’s longest hiatuses.

According to reports from Japan, Gangsta will return to serialization on July 3rd. Shinchosha, the manga’s publisher, confirmed Kohske’s long-awaited return will go down this summer. This comeback promises to last as Gangsta has made a few sporadic returns over the years. The manga’s main hiatus dates back to 2015, but it returned for brief periods in 2016 and 2019. However, if all goes well, Kohske’s manga will resume in full force.

“Thank you for continuing to support this series. We are happy to announce that Gangsta will resume serialization in COMIC BUNCH KAI on July 3, 2026. The series has been on hiatus while Kohske underwent treatment for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and other complications. As the creator continues treatment while working on the series, future updates will be released irregularly. We will share further news as it becomes available,” the manga’s publisher confirmed to fans, teasing them about the series’ return. “We kindly ask for your continued support and understanding.”

Gangsta Isn’t The Only Hit Manga To Take A Long Hiatus

Gangsta is ready to leave its hiatus behind, but the same cannot be said for some of the industry’s other top series. A number of best-selling manga are still on a break, leaving their futures uncertain. For instance, Ai Yazawa’s beloved series Nana went on hiatus in 2009 due to undisclosed health issues, and the series has yet to stage a comeback. From Vagabond to Berserk, some of the best manga in the world have experienced extended hiatuses, but no series has been hit harder than Hunter x Hunter.

After all, Hunter x Hunter has been on hiatus frequently since Yoshihiro Togashi began the series in 1998. In fact, more than 60% of its lifespan has been spent on break given its creator’s chronic health issues. The series’ longest hiatus spanned 184 chapters, leaving Hunter x Hunter fans bereft for three years before Togashi staged a comeback. However, the artist does still work on the manga actively as Togashi often posts updates on X (formerly Twitter) for his beloved series.

Gangsta Is One Of The Most Underrated Manga

With Gangsta eyeing its return, fans of the action thriller are hopeful Kohske’s manga will get its due at last. Between its long hiatus and the manga’s short-lived anime, Gangsta remains one of the most underrated series in the industry. Loaded with dark plot twists and mature content, Gangsta is hardly meant for children given its intense storylines. Set in a city managed by four mafia families, Gangsta isn’t afraid to explore the dark side of crime. From drug trade to prostitution and police violence, Gangsta makes no apologies for its volatile thrills. There are few series that can compare to Kohske’s gritty manga, and as manga continues to expand globally, this thriller is just what the industry needs.

If you are unfamiliar with Gangsta, the manga’s release is overseen by Viz Media in the United States as volumes are available both digitally and physically. For more info on the dark thriller, you can read the official synopsis of Gangsta below:

“In the city of Ergastulum, a shady ville filled with made men and petty thieves, whores on the make and cops on the take, there are some deeds too dirty for even its jaded inhabitants to touch. Enter the “Handymen,” Nic and Worick, who take care of the jobs no one else will handle. Until the day when a cop they know on the force requests their help in taking down a new gang muscling in on the territory of a top Mafia family. It seems like business (and mayhem) as usual, but the Handymen are about to find that this job is a lot more than they bargained for.”
