Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will seemingly reunite with a familiar villain in Spider-Man: Brand New Day thanks to a detail hidden in the movie’s marketing. Hitting theaters on July 31, the fourth solo Spider-Man movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is poised to put Peter Parker through the wringer. Not only is he alone, broke, depressed, and mutating, but he’s got a load of antagonists to fight.
There are several confirmed villains for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The movie is set to bring Tarantula, Tombstone, Boomerang, and The Hand into contact with Spider-Man at last. Scorpion is poised to return after Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s tease. Sadie Sink’s mystery character seems set up to be Brand New Day‘s main villain, while The Hulk will be a temporary threat to Peter, too.
Except for Tombstone, all of these villains have been featured at some point in Sony and Marvel Studios’ marketing campaign for the Phase 6 blockbuster. A TV spot even appears to confirm that Ramrod will be another bad guy for the web-slinger to take down. Other villains could pop up, too, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s second trailer teasing a familiar foe’s return subtly.
Near the end of the second trailer, as Spider-Man is falling through the sky with Hulk and pieces of a building falling behind him, it’s now become clear he is wearing a device around his right hand/arm. The piece of tech appears to be the electric gauntlet worn by Shocker in Spider-Man: Homecoming. And if his weapon is back, it seems the villain will be, too.
Spider-Man Wearing Shocker’s Gauntlet Teases The Villain’s Return
It would be incredibly odd for Spider-Man to be wearing Shocker’s gauntlet if the villain does not have a role in Brand New Day. This shouldn’t be a weapon that Peter already owns, nor would it make a ton of sense for him to invent a version for himself. The best explanation for Spider-Man having the gauntlet is if Shocker appears in some capacity.
This would mark Shocker’s first MCU appearance since Homecoming. There, the MCU introduced two different versions of the villain. Jackson Brice (Logan Marshall-Green) took on the mantle first, but he was killed by Vulture. This allowed Herman Schultz (Bokeem Woodbine) to wield the gauntlet next. The last time we saw Herman’s Shocker, he had been webbed up by Spider-Man at Midtown School and left to be arrested.
While Homecoming had a deleted scene where one of Peter’s classmates took Shocker’s gauntlets, Brand New Day is not beholden to that development. Instead, it could reveal that Shocker escaped before getting arrested or that he’s now out of prison, either due to his sentence ending or breaking out.
Either way, Spider-Man could acquire Shocker’s gauntlet in Brand New Day after defeating one of his earliest villains again. Marvel and Sony have yet to confirm Shocker’s involvement officially, but the gauntlet makes it all the more likely.
After all, Woodbine teased last year in an interview with The Direct that, “I get a feeling it might not be the last time you see the Shocker.” Perhaps that’s because he knew he’d report to Brand New Day‘s set a few months later.
Shocker’s Return In Spider-Man: Brand New Day Could Set Up A New Sinister Six
Including Shocker in Brand New Day could do more than just be a way for Marvel to bring back a key Spider-Man villain. This could be part of the MCU’s plans to build a Sinister Six team to take on Holland’s web-slinger.
Shocker would join Scorpion as villains that Spider-Man has faced off with multiple times in the MCU. They already worked together in Homecoming, and after repeatedly failing to defeat New York’s hero, they could decide that it’s time to increase their forces. The Sinister Six could be what comes next, as Shocker and Scorpion recruit other villains to take on Spider-Man together.
After fighting a multiversal team of villains who fought his Spider-bros, the MCU giving Peter a supervillain team from his own universe would make sense. It’s one of many ways Spider-Man: Brand New Day could set up the next solo movie for Holland’s character.
