Beth and Rip’s future is still uncertain following Paramount+’s Dutton Ranch season 2 decision. Luke Grimes’ Marshals on CBS may have kicked off this new era of Yellowstone storytelling, but the true continuation of the flagship didn’t start until John Dutton III’s most loyal successors’ story in Texas started several weeks later. Following a tragedy that forced them out of Dillon, Montana, Beth and Rip settled in Rio Paloma, where they have encountered new allies and foes.
Unsurprisingly for a Taylor Sheridan-backed series, especially one with clear ties to Yellowstone, Dutton Ranch was an immediate hit for Paramount+. It posted the streamer’s biggest debut viewership ever, dethroning Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell’s The Madison, which debuted in March and is the newest standalone series from the same writer and producer. Given this, Dutton Ranch season 2’s renewal was only a matter of time — something that Paramount+ finally confirmed ahead of the season 1 finale.
Dutton Ranch Season 2 Will Be Different From Season 1
While Dutton Ranch season 2 is officially a go, the specifics of what comes next for its story, and not just because it has been great in keeping viewers on their toes. Instead, this is rooted in a major change in its creative team, with creator and showrunner Chad Feehan’s departure after its debut year. Ahead of Dutton Ranch‘s premiere back in May, news broke out that he was booted out of the role, after Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, Sheridan, and 101 Studios boss David Glasser were unsatisfied with his production handling. So far, Feehan has remained mum about the matter.
Considering his creative clout in Dutton Ranch season 1, losing him in season 2 means drastic changes from what viewers have seen from the series thus far. That can be a good or a bad thing, depending on everyone’s thoughts about the series. Regardless, what’s clear is that Dutton Ranch’s direction after its debut year has yet to be decided, as Sheridan has yet to find a proper replacement for Feehan.
Why Dutton Ranch Is Specifically Important To Taylor Sheridan’s Neo-Western Empire
Nearly every single project that Sheridan has ties to has been a hit. Shows like Landman, Tulsa King, and The Madison have all found their viewers. Still, his empire’s crowning jewel is still Yellowstone. It’s no secret that the flagship had to end abruptly because of the internal problems that were brought up by Kevin Costner’s unexpected exit. In 2026, however, Sheridan successfully continued its legacy with Marshals and Dutton Ranch.

Dutton Ranch’s True Villain Is A Retconned Yellowstone Character
As Beth and Rip fight for a future, it’s becoming clear that Dutton Ranch’s real villain is beloved Yellowstone character that has been retconned.
Among the two sequels, however, Beth and Rip’s story is more like Yellowstone season 6. While Marshals‘ story still takes place in Montana and East Camp, Kayce’s new life doesn’t really have strong ties to the legacy of the Duttons, which makes sense, considering that he never really had the urge to preserve his heritage more than carving his own path. Meanwhile, Beth and Rip had and continue to honor John III’s legacy, albeit sometimes begrudgingly. Overall, Dutton Ranch is the best Yellowstone continuation that there will ever be.
