Fans of Jason Statham have another few months to go before he returns to the big screen. Statham has already staked out his go-to month, January, for the debut of The Beekeeper 2. The movie will hopefully bring Statham back to winning ways at the box office after a recent setback. His 2026 release, Shelter, underperformed commercially in January. The movie grossed around $53 million worldwide against a reported budget of $50 million, falling short of his two previous releases, The Beekeeper and A Working Man. More surprisingly, Shelter underperformed despite having received positive reviews from critics and audiences. The positive reception came in handy when Shelter debuted on the PVOD market, where it flourished.
The film carried this positive momentum on to its streaming release, when it dominated the Starz charts for over a month. But now, after 40 days at the top, Shelter has been overthrown. The new number one movie on Starz isn’t one you’d expect, but we’ll get to it in a moment. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, Shelter followed Statham’s highly skilled ex-assassin who is hiding out in the highlands. He’s forced back into his violent past life when his cover is blown. The movie holds a 64% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “Classing up an overdone premise with professional execution, Shelter is highly derivative of previous Jason Statham action vehicles but lean and mean enough to forgive the recycled tropes.”
Here’s the New Movie That Overthrew ‘Shelter’
However, it was the movie’s 87% audience score on the aggregator website that drove it to home-video success in the last couple of months. According to FlixPatrol, Shelter has spent 45 days on the domestic Starz chart, and 130 days on the domestic Amazon chart. However, it has now slipped to number two on Starz, having been replaced as the streamer’s most-watched movie by They Took My Daughter. Starring Vanessa Simmons, the movie doesn’t have an official Rotten Tomatoes score yet. But its logline makes it seem like the perfect alternative to Statham’s thrillers. It follows a mother who infiltrates a criminal organization to rescue her kidnapped daughter before she’s trafficked. You can check the movie out on Starz, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
