KPop Demon Hunters is returning for a brand-new adventure, but the next chapter for the Netflix original is already shrouded in mystery. Within months of its release, the fantasy musical blockbuster became the most-watched Netflix original film in history, taking the lead by almost 100 million estimated views. Paired with the immense success of its limited theatrical release, KPop Demon Hunters went from a niche animated feature to the biggest movie in the world seemingly overnight. In under a year, the genre-bending homage to Korean culture created by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans has become a bona fide cultural phenomenon.
Without question, what took the title to another critically acclaimed stratosphere was the legendary KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack. The original music created for the film ranged from inescapable earworms to devastating power ballads, and its biggest hit— Huntrix’s “Golden”— unsurprisingly won a Golden Globe, an Oscar, and a Grammy (among numerous other accolades). While the devoted fandom the movie has cultivated has the official KPop Demon Hunters sequel to look forward to in the coming years, Netflix has announced something even more exciting in the meantime: a full-blown tour. Yet, exactly who will be performing the soundtrack remains a mystery.
Netflix Hasn’t Disclosed Who Will Headline The KPop Demon Hunters Tour
It’s Unclear What A “Real-Life” Set Means For The Animated Hit
The immediate reaction to the KPop Demon Hunters world tour was, understandably, excitement, but it’s unclear what concertgoers will actually be in for. Promotional materials have kept descriptions vague, calling the tour “inspired” by KPop Demon Hunters and saying the show will bring “elements” of its story to life (via Tudum). Of course, fans will expect to see the titular girl group Huntrix, but the singing voices of Zoey, Rumi, and Mira don’t like up with their speaking voices— as is the case with their rival band, Saja Boys. Nevertheless, the cast has set a precedent for live performances.
At major award ceremonies, the singing voices of Huntrix— provided by Ejae (Rumi), Audrey Nuna (Mina), and Rei Ami (Zoey)— have performed hit songs from the soundtrack live. Nevertheless, there are plenty of alternatives for the Netflix-helmed tour, including adding projections of the animated characters or having virtual models perform like Vocaloid artists. Conversely, Gorillaz concerts usually have real musicians play in front of complex animations of the band’s fictional members, balancing the draw of the main characters with the immensely impressive talent of live performers.
Even still, there have been IP-linked tours and “live” performances of animated musicals that employ a different tactic entirely: cosplay. Whether actors are lip-syncing to the original track or singing live, they’re dressed head-to-toe in costumes, wigs, and makeup that transform them into fan-favorite characters. As such, KPop Demon Hunters fans don’t have much information to go off of while they wait for the ticket sales. They could be signing up to see a holographic girl group, award-winning vocalists, or cosplay-clad character actors— but, regardless of who performs it, concertgoers at least know which songs they can expect to hear.
The KPop Demon Hunters World Tour Is Coming At The Perfect Time
Netflix Is Trying To Ride The Wave Of Popularity For As Long As Possible
KPop Demon Hunters has been a can’t-miss title for nearly an entire year, but the highly-anticipated sequel likely won’t be released until 2030 at the earliest. While its cultural capital is showing no signs of waning just yet, five years is a long time to wait, despite that being a fairly typical turnaround time for animated sequels. Regardless, Netflix is coming up with increasingly innovative ways to hold fans over until the high-octane follow-up drops.
