Right now is a great time to be a fan of The Lord of the Rings, with several movies in development and a TV series confirmed to release before the end of the year. Next up on the slate for The Lord of the Rings fans is the third season of the prequel series, The Rings of Power, which is set thousands of years before the events of the Hobbit movies. Amazon has confirmed that The Rings of Power Season 3 will return before the end of this year, on November 11. Tolkien heads are also eagerly anticipating the franchise’s return to the big screen next December with the premiere of The Hunt for Gollum, but fans were dealt a minor blow when it was confirmed that Viggo Mortensen had been recast as Aragorn, who will now be played by Jamie Dornan.
Early this morning, a mysterious new Lord of the Rings project was announced that has fans around the world excited. Warhorse Studios, the same studio that has delivered both Kingdom Come: Deliverance games, has officially announced its development of a new open-world Middle-earth RPG. Little is known about the project at this time, as it’s in the infantile stages of development, but it can safely be considered one of the most anticipated video games in the works right now. The project has been rumored for a while now, and as the speculation continued to pick up steam over the last few weeks, Warhorse decided it could not let things slide under the radar any longer. The studio is also working on a third Kingdom Come title, but like the LOTR game, details about the project are being kept under wraps at this time.
When Does ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ Come Out?
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will be released in theaters on December 17, the same day as Avengers: Secret Wars. It’s not known at this time if either movie will be delayed or will move up on the calendar, but if they stick to the same spot, it will surely be one of the biggest movie weekends in history. The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum was originally set to be released later this year, but the film was delayed to 2027 to give the team time in 2026 to focus on production.
