Ridley Scott has given us iconic movies and franchises that are entertaining the audience decades later. Alien, Hannibal, Prometheus, American Gangster, The Martian, the list can go on and on, and keep fans engaged in debates over which feature is superior. However, there’s one movie that is universally praised: Gladiator.
Starring Russell Crowe, the 2000s feature was iconic for so many reasons: the larger-than-life vision, Crowe’s Oscar-winning performance, and extremely quotable dialogue. But underneath all the glamour of the arena and Maximus’ (Crowe) vengeance, the feature quietly elevated the sword-and-sandals genre with the grandeur of the historical epic. It became a massive box-office hit, grossing over $465 million worldwide, and established itself as a definitive pop-culture touchstone of the early 2000s. Further, the movie was nominated for several awards and even picked up Oscars for Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe, along with other accolades.
A couple of years ago, Scott tried to recreate the same magic with Gladiator II. He brought in Paul Mescal as protagonist Lucius, who has a similar arc of freedom and revenge. The sequel was praised for significantly dialing up theatrical scale and trading the original’s somber moments for massive set pieces. We follow the grown son of Maximus, Lucius, who is forced into slavery and the Colosseum after Roman legions invade his home. Driven by vengeance, he rises as a gladiator to challenge Rome’s corrupt leadership.
Despite being a legacy sequel and having a cast full of heavyweight performers, Gladiator II didn’t excite theater-goers. It became a box-office flop, earning only $462.2 million on a $310 million budget. The movie divided its audience, but not by a wide margin. While critics gave it a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the audience was more appreciative, awarding it an 80% rating.
‘Gladiator II’ Is Emerging as Global Streaming Hit
But those are not the only markers of a movie’s success nowadays. Gladiator II has become a hit with audiences, rising to the top spot on Paramount+’s global top 10 list. Also on the list are Glen Powell’s The Running Man, Brad Pitt’s World War Z, Henry Cavill’s Night Hunter, Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick, and more. Gladiator 2 is worth a shot if you like the original movie. As for action pieces, it has some imaginative ones that also include flooding the Colosseum and some rhinos. Also, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Denzel Washington gave some credible performances.
