Bistro Nido, a French-Japanese fusion restaurant, has closed its doors for good after three years of service - leaving diners distraught over the sudden news

A popular restaurant has closed its doors for good after three years of service – leaving diners distraught over the sudden news.

Bistro Nido, a French-Japanese fusion restaurant in Sydney’s CBD, was a go-to dining spot, particularly for its menu items – including steak frites, crab pasta with miso, wagyu cheeseburgers and crêpe Suzette.

The bistro announced it was permanently shutting down after its last service on Sunday, May 17.

‘On behalf of the team, thank you so much for choosing to dine with us. It has been an enjoyable journey and a pleasure to serve you,’ the owners said.

The news comes just three weeks after the restaurant confirmed it had made a ‘difficult decision’ to shut its doors.

‘It is with a heavy heart that we announce Bistro Nido will be closing… Thank you to everyone who has shown such love and support for Bistro Nido. It has been an incredible journey, but as all good things come to an end,’ the restaurant said.

‘Over the past few years, it has been our absolute pleasure to serve you. We’ve always taken pride in creating a memorable dining experience for every guest who walked through our doors.

‘Once again, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being a part of our journey.’

The announcement has come as a huge shock to hundreds of customers, with many saying it was one of their regular restaurants to dine at in Sydney.

‘You’ll be missed! We love your pasta. Fantastic service and we’ve loved being one of your regulars for the past few years,’ one said.

‘I dined with you when I was visiting Sydney and we all had an amazing meal. I’m sorry that we won’t be able to do so again when we next visit. Good luck with your next chapter,’ another shared.

‘No! This is the best cheeseburger in Sydney,’ one said.

‘No I’m crying,’ another added.

It’s unclear why the restaurant closed but fans have described it as ‘sad times’ and a ‘tragic loss’ to Sydney’s dining scene.

‘Unfortunately we close with heavy hearts,’ Bistro Nido said in its response to diners.

‘As sad as it is to say goodbye, we are so grateful to be able to serve you all and have your support for the past few years.’

The restaurant, known for ‘pushing boundaries’, opened its doors in early 2023, offering customers a European classic-inspired menu with hints of Japanese cooking techniques and ingredients.

Led by executive chef Zachary Tan, head chef Andrew Lee and executive pastry chef Markus Andrew, the team worked with artisans, farmers and butchers to bring these fusion dishes to the table.

The bistro’s name ‘Nido’ comes from the Japanese word for ‘twice’, a subtle nod to double cooking techniques.

The venue boasted an average rating of 4.4 stars and almost 500 rave reviews on Google.
