Punisher: One Last Kill Star Teases Nasty New Baddie

The Punisher is one of Marvel‘s most popular and complicated heroes. Driven by his trauma in the military and the murder of his family, Frank Castle lives only to deliver (capital) punishment to the guilty. With turns on series such as One Life to Live, Who’s the Boss?, Ugly Betty, and Poker Face, Judith Light is a television darling. In short, the two seem to have little in common. And yet, Light will not only appear in the Marvel Special Presentation The Punisher: One Last Kill, but will also play one of the most unpleasant villains in the antihero’s rogues gallery.

To her credit, Light recognizes the potential dissonance. “I think people will be surprised. I think they will really appreciate it,” she told viewers of The Today Show. “This is really about transformation and what it means to be a person who holds on to revenge.”

That person who holds on to revenge is Ma Gnucci, matriarch of the Gnucci crime family. She made her debut in 2000’s The Punisher #4 by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, part of the infamous arc, “Welcome Back, Frank.” That storyline brought Castle back to the land of the living after spending some time as an angelic enforcer who shot demons with angel guns. When Ennis came aboard, he had a mandate to move Punisher back to his gritty roots in New York City, a goal he accomplished by having Frank announce his return by brutally murdering all the members of the Gnucci family, save Isabella a.k.a. Ma.

In Punisher #4, Ma and her thugs chase Frank into the New York City Zoo. They think they have him trapped, but they’ve only given Frank (well, Ennis) an opportunity to kill people in unique and animal-focused ways. One guy gets shoved into a pirhana tank; another strangled by a boa constrictor. And Ma gets mauled by polar bears, after Frank punches one in the face to get it riled up.
