Late night host Bill Maher hit out at musicians who backed out of the Freedom 250 concert series in his show on Friday night

Bill Maher blasted musicians who dropped out of President Donald Trump’s Freedom 250 concert series, claiming the move signals Democrats ‘don’t really love America.’

Musical groups like Poison, Morris Day, Young MC, the Commodores and Martina McBride nixed their appearances at the concert series celebrating the United States’ 250th birthday.

The artists claimed they were led to believe Freedom 250 was nonpartisan, only to learn that it was tied to the Trump Administration.

‘They all pulled out,’ Maher said on his show Real Time with Bill Maher on Friday night.

‘This is a question about what looks best for the Democrats, because I don’t think that looks good. It looks like you are just what people say about you – you don’t really love America. It looks [like] you think Trump is more important than the country itself.’

The comedian then argued that the performers made a mistake by abandoning the event, which he said has instead become a MAGA rally.

‘Now it’s just a big MAGA rally, this whole thing,’ Maher lamented. ‘Now it’s just Trump and Lee Greenwood,’ he said, referring to the country singer.

‘Wouldn’t it have been better to play this gig?’ the host asked, rhetorically. ‘It’s a month-long gig, lots of people, like, just celebrating America. Can’t we all just celebrate America itself and leave Trump out of it?’

But Maher’s guest, Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, argued it was the president who made the anniversary event political.

‘There was a nonpartisan, apolitical effort to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. And instead of just letting that effort go forward, Donald Trump took it over, right, to create a parallel set of events,’ Murphy, of Connecticut, explained.

‘My understanding is these artists thought that they were going to the nonpartisan effort. And then when they found out it was just a predicate to a Trump rally, they didn’t want to be part of it.

‘I think this would have been a lot better for the country if Trump had decided to just let professionals, let people who just care about celebrating America with no political agenda be part [of] this,’ he continued.

‘I agree there’s no reason to overly politicize this, but Trump decided to politicize it by essentially shutting down the citizens who were leading it and turning it into a big MAGA event.’

Several of the artists who had been scheduled to perform at the event have also claimed they did not realize Trump’s involvement in the plans.

‘I was presented with an opportunity to perform at a nonpartisan event but that turned out to be misleading,’ country hitmaker Martina McBride posted to Instagram on Thursday, adding that she had ‘asked lots of questions and was assured this was a nonpartisan event that was meant to celebrate ALL 50 states.

‘I thought this was a great way to celebrate the states and also bring people together in the way that only music can,’ she continued. ‘I saw it as just a bigger version of so many state fairs that I have performed at over the years, celebrating community and what makes each state special.’

But McBride added, ‘Yesterday things started changing and what we were told is, in fact, not what is happening.’

Rapper Young MC also announced last week that he would not be performing at the Freedom 250 event, claiming that ‘The artists were never told about any political involvement with the event.’

‘And despite the claims by the organizers that the event is non-partisan, SPIN magazine describes it as “Trump-backed,”‘ he continued. ‘I hope to perform in DC in the near future at an event that is not so politically charged.’

Young MC, whose real name is Marvin Young, later clarified how his name came to be associated with Freedom 250, which he called a ‘bait-and-switch’ scheme in an interview with Vibe.

‘I had no clue it was considered a “Trump-backed” event, so that was new to me,’ he said. ‘My whole thing was “Tell me what the event is, what it’s about, who you are, and then give me the choice of whether I want to do the event or not.” I was never given that choice.

‘I was told one thing, and then it was a bait-and-switch,’ Young MC alleged. ‘All the comments I’ve seen from the artists that have dropped out thought it was supposed to be a regular show in DC.’

President Trump announced in the aftermath that he was canceling the concert.

But in a lengthy post on Truth Social, Trump said the event would continue as planned on June 24.

He said the event would feature himself and a number of other speakers while also treating the crowd to the ‘Greatest Music ever played’ later this month in ‘magnificent’ Washington D.C.

‘We will be bringing you, LIVE, the Greatest Rally, EVER!’ Trump announced on Truth Social.

‘It will be special at every level — A Rally to end all Rallies!’ he said.

‘We don’t want singers with no talent, but big fees to put you to sleep, we’ve told them all to stay home.’

‘All we want is you, me, a few speakers, and the Greatest Music ever played, the same music you have listened to for years!’

The president went on to explain that country artist Lee Greenwood would introduce him at the event, which will also feature MAGA opera singer Christopher Macchio.

Trump also used his announcement to proclaim that he is the ‘Number One Attraction anywhere in the World’ as he compared himself to Elvis.

The president said unlike The King, who needed a guitar to wow his fans, all the President needs is a microphone and a good speech to get ‘much larger audiences than Elvis in his prime,’ he wrote.

‘I am ordering my Representatives to look at the feasibility of doing an AMERICA IS BACK Rally,’ he wrote on Truth Social. ‘Same time, same location. Only Great Patriots invited – It will be a Wild and Beautiful Celebration of America!’
