Happy Father’s Day weekend! This week’s Feel-Good Friday is a few weeks old, but it hits all the bases: spotlighting a dedicated father who moves heaven and earth to honor the commencement milestone of his son, as well as passes on his legacy of service to his country.
It’s as good as it gets.
Fatherhood, honor, and sacrifice are the subject of this week’s Feel-Good Friday.

Master Sergeant Tobias Jackson has served in the U.S. Air Force for 18 years, and has been stationed in Okinawa, Japan, for the past three. Master Sgt. Jackson knew this was the year his son Branden would be graduating from Huffman High School in Birmingham, AL, but Branden assumed that his father would not be able to come all the way from Japan for the ceremony. What Branden didn’t know was that his dad had taken morale leave specifically to return in time for Branden’s commencement.
So cool.
Just after crossing the stage, Branden was shocked to see his father, Air Force Master Sgt. Tobias Jackson, who flew home from Japan to attend the ceremony.
Before his name was called, Branden shook an officer’s hand and quietly said, “I made it.”
Moments later, the surprise unfolded as Tobias Jackson greeted his son after he received his diploma. Branden appeared stunned as the two embraced while the crowd applauded and cheered from the audience.
“It’s been very hard to keep it under wraps. He’s grown into such a great young man, and he understands the significance of what we do and how we do it. When he thought I was not going to make it, his response was, ‘I completely understand,'” Master Sgt. Jackson said before the big moment. “It took a lot of planning, but I definitely was not going to miss this. I knew this was a very large milestone, more than what people think.”
“When I first saw him, I didn’t recognize him…. I saw the face, and it was amazing… I don’t even know how to explain it,” he said.
But this wasn’t the only surprise Master Sgt. Jackson had in store for his son.

Master Sgt. Tobias Jackson, stationed in Japan for the past three years, secretly flew back to Birmingham, Alabama, just in time for his son Branden’s graduation at Huffman High School.
Branden thought his dad couldn’t make it and was prepared to watch online. The moment exploded when Tobias appeared on stage right after Branden received his diploma — the shock, the hug, the tears… pure father-son love.
But the surprises didn’t stop there. The very next day, after Branden got his driver’s license, his dad handed him the keys to a brand new car.
This is real fatherhood sacrifice, presence, and showing up big time.
We love to see it! Proud dad vibes forever.
Branden had just passed his driver’s test the day before, so he was experiencing triple happiness: seeing his father for the first time in two years, walking across the stage to graduate, and receiving a new vehicle.
Branden wants to continue his father’s legacy of service. Now that he has graduated, he plans to join the U.S. Air Force and focus on cybersecurity.
This young man not only understands and respects his father’s commitment to sacrifice and duty, but he wants to follow in his footsteps and replicate his service to the country.
We are grateful for Master Sgt. Tobias Jackson for his commitment to the U.S. and his commitment to his family.
Here’s a longer story recorded by the Birmingham City Schools District.
Enjoy!
