With the allegations of sexual harassment and assault against now-former Democrat Congressman Eric Swalwell (CA-14) that have been reported over the last week, we’ve been asking a lot of questions about Swalwell’s bestie, Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ).
As RedState reported, the bromance between the two has been well documented, going back to the days when Gallego was also a member of the House of Representatives and the two were roommates. Swalwell, in fact, called Gallego his “best friend in the world” as recently as November, a characterization the first-term senator seemed to cheerfully embrace.
Swalwell and Gallego are close enough that when the story of the sexual harassment allegations first broke, Gallego’s first instinct was to try and cast doubt. As the week went on, however, Gallego, who was also chairman of Swalwell’s failed 2020 presidential campaign, began to change his tune, saying he believed the women who were accusing his best friend of rape.

In response to media inquiries, a panicky, nervous-looking Gallego has denied knowing anything related to the allegations, proclaiming that the disgraced former gubernatorial candidate was leading a “double life.” Gallego also denied that he was the second man in an unverified video clip that has been circulating on X that shows a woman who is alleged to be a sex worker, Swalwell, and a man whose face is partially obscured but who has features that some have compared to Gallego.
On Thursday, however, GOP Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (FL-13), who has been leading the fight to expel the likes of Swalwell (who resigned Monday), confirmed in a CBS News interview that the Senator whom she was talking about in a tweet she posted to Sen. Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) on Wednesday was Gallego.
During the interview, Luna was asked to give her opinion on whether the allegations against Gallego rose to the level of being criminal in nature. Her response was that “if it involves people who were potentially trafficked, yes.” When she was asked about the trafficking allegation, she responded by saying, “Anytime you are knowingly engaging in purchasing someone for sex, that should be taken seriously.”
Luna also indicated that possible campaign violations by Gallego needed to be looked into as well.

It’s seems like the Senate has its own trash to take out. @LeaderJohnThune You need to look into the allegations against one of your Senators, it’s very disturbing. My chief will be contacting your chief.

RedState reported on Wednesday that former GOP Rep. George Santos (NY-03) teased on X that Gallego might be next:
A former staffer of Gallego has claimed he terminated her after he made a sexual advance on her and she rejected him and complained to the then Congressman’s chief of staff… She tells me she’s going public with it in great detail. Stay tuned! The whispers of Sen Gallego has [sic] always been rampant but if this shoe drops he’s cooked!
So when you were roommates you are going to tell me you didn’t know what he was doing?
Dude get ahead of it and resign you are next! https://t.co/3Yk71AQ21V

Thune told CNN that Luna’s complaint has been referred to the Ethics Committee:
Asked Leader Thune if Luna’s claims against Gallego have any merit
“I don’t know,” he said. “I don’t think we’ve seen anything other than what she’s put out, what she’s tweeted publicly, so, but we have referred to the Ethics committee the complaint” https://t.co/r5ICcj7hCB

As of this writing, Gallego has not made a public statement about Luna’s claims.
