36’ – Saka gets on the ball down the right and wins a foul from a needless, silly Mendes shove on the back. Rice trots over to take the free kick. And Havertz and Gabriel both try to get on the end of it. The former connects with it and sends it off target. Either way the latter is judged to have committed a foul in the box anyway.

34’ – Dembele, dropping deep to get on the ball, floats a pass forward only for Raya to collect under minimal pressure, much to the delight of Arsenal fans behind that goal.

32’ – Another wave of PSG attacks. All 11 Arsenal players are in their final third and, for all of their excellent play so far, it does seem a little early to retreat so far.

30’ – Safonov is fine to continue and the match resumes with another long spell of PSG possession. Doue weaves into the box and Gabriel makes what looks like a fantastic tackle in the box to win the ball. PSG, who also have Mendes down injured while play continues, are demanding a penalty but the referee immediately signals for Doue to get up and continue.

Indeed replays show it is a magnificent challenge from the Arsenal defender.

28’ – While Safonov has an ice pack rubbed on him and fixes his ponytail, TV cameras pan to the great and good of European football watching on in the stands.

“Arsenal have inevitably had to be very compact but they’re getting a lot of joy when they break and almost run straight through PSG,” says Chief Football Writer Miguel Delaney.
