It’s happening.
Thursday marked the start of FIFA 2026 World Cup play, across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with first game being played south of the border.
Now, it’s our turn in the spotlight! The U.S. hosts its premiere tournament game, with the men’s team representing the good ol’ USA getting a start in the tourney by playing its first game against Paraguay (in a Group D pairing) on Friday night in L.A,
Earlier this week, the Republicans and Democrats held their own friendly competition on Wednesday night – although, this one happens yearly – the charity Congressional Baseball Game held at Nationals Park in D.C. My colleague Nick Arama shared the not-all-that-shocking results, with the GOP beating the Dems in short order, 11-2. And if you missed Deputy Managing Ed. Susie Moore’s senator, Eric Schmitt (R-MO), making a heroic play in the outfield, you must take a look-see in the story linked below.
Back to soccer. As I previously wrote, the Department of Homeland Security has been prepping for months to make sure that every game venue for the FIFA event is safe and secure for guests and participants, between now and July 19 when the international soccer competition ends.

Part of the fun ofthe American national men’s team playing seems to be rubbing off on Republicans, some of whom made their support known with enthusiastic posts on social media before the game.
Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY-17) shared a patriotic message on his X account:
As America begins its quest for the World Cup, we’re all behind Team USA as they take the field tonight.
There’s nothing like seeing our nation compete on the world stage, representing the hard work, determination, and spirit that make our country great. Wishing the team the… pic.twitter.com/MeWFEnjCAY

Go USA! 🇺🇸⚽
And who better to get the U.S. team ready, and excited to put their game faces on, than the President of the United States in a timely phone call – as Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA-04) shared on his own post Friday:

Americans and foreign visitors from around the world are ready to cheer on their teams throughout the World Cup – some of them inside the stadium, where food and alcoholic drinks are at sky-high premium prices, unsurprisngly.
I have the feeling the prices are much more reasonable at this fine establishment which, based on its X bio, usually serves up brews and wings (and pizza) for Buffalo Bills/Sabres fans; For Friday, the advertisement showed that it is happily hosting a patriotic USA World Cup viewing party tonight:
