Former Manchester United star Roy Keane has criticised the new trend of WAGs wearing replica England shirts with their partner's name on

As one of television’s most opinionated stars, Roy Keane’s controversial comments have been known to offend many.

Now his latest targets are the England WAGs who have found themselves on the receiving end of the former Manchester United star’s acid tongue.

ITV pundit Keane has taken issue with their new trend for wearing replica England shirts with their partner’s names on the back as they watch from the stands cheering them on as they play for their country.

Speaking yesterday on Gary Neville’s podcast, The Overlap, Keane, 54, was asked what he would like to put in Room 101 – meaning it would no longer exist.

‘Oh, the jersey. The World Cup, when all the players’ wives and families are going to the match, all the wives are in the jerseys with the players’ names on the back, wow,’ he ranted.

‘Children is fine, but the wives and partners wearing their jerseys with their name on the back is ridiculous. All sitting in the same family section, I’ve got my jersey, have you got yours? I’m not having it.

‘They only do it at the World Cup. You don’t see it at Old Trafford or Anfield every week. So what’s with the World Cup? Imagine a woman going, ‘I’m going to put a football jersey on today with my husband’s name on the back.’ He added: ‘A year later they are separated, most of them.

‘And they’re all getting pictures, and they’re pointing at a Jimmy or Johnny on the back. We know who you are married to.’

Former Arsenal and England star Ian Wright said: ‘I don’t mind it, Roy. Her husband is playing and she’s proud of him and she wants to wear his shirt.’

John Stones’ wife Olivia, Jude Bellingham’s girlfriend Ashlyn Castro and Ollie Watkins’ wife Ellie all wore England shirts in the stands for the Three Lions’ 4-2 win over Croatia.

And goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s wife Megan shared a picture of her wearing a shirt with her husband’s name on the back before she travelled to the match.

Meanwhile, after the victory manager Thomas Tuchel gave the players a day off, allowing them to see their wives and girlfriends in Kansas City, where the team is based for the duration of the tournament.
