A Mexican sports journalist was in the middle of a live report when he was carjacked at gunpoint on Tuesday.
Journalist Fernando Vargas was in his car doing a live interview for the Activo Deportes show ‘Bla, bla, bla deportivo’ from his car at a gas station in the city of Cuernavaca.
Cuernavaca is located in the Mexican state of Morelos – located just to the south of Mexico City, which is set to host the opening match of the World Cup in less than a month’s time.
Mid-interview, the driver’s side door on Vargas’ car was opened by a man holding a gun.
On the broadcast, the robber was heard chambering a round in his weapon before demanding, ‘The key, quick. Key, phones and wallets, quick.’
The show’s host, Ed Martinez, looked on in shock as Vargas calmly grabbed several items – including his phone – before stepping out of the car.

Vargas – who is also the communication’s director for Mexico’s National Professional Basketball League – was heard telling the robber ‘Calm down, Calm down.’
The video went dark as Vargas and the robber were heard speaking back and forth during the ordeal.
It’s not clear if the carjacker knew that Vargas was on live television and streaming during the entire incident.
Martinez later took to Instagram to say that Vargas managed to get past the whole ordeal without any injury. However, Vargas’ phone, wallet and car were all stolen.
‘Thankfully, he’s safe, but very scared,’ Martinez wrote in the post.
‘If anyone recognizes the guy in the video, please help us and report him to the authorities. This happened in Morelos.’
At the time of publishing, no reports indicated that an arrest had been made.
