Most of us are familiar with the concept of NIMBY: “Not in my backyard.” It’s a common enough thing, after all. A lot of Valley residents right here in our corner of south-central Alaska sure spoke up when someone floated the idea of building a huge data center in our community, and the idea got dropped like the proverbial hot potato. We like our corner of the Susitna Valley the way it is.
But when you combine NIMBY with leftist hypocrisy, then you get something really schadenfreudalicious. Case in point: New York City’s “democratic socialist” (you can read that as “communist”) Mayor Zohran Mamdani provoked a firestorm of NIMBY when he proposed putting a homeless shelter in the artsy and “diverse” East Village.
East Village residents who voted for New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani by a 40-point margin are now suing to stop a building in their neighborhood from becoming a temporary homeless shelter.
The lawsuit, filed with the New York City Supreme Court on Monday, shows hesitation even among Mamdani supporters about the cost of implementing some of his plans.
News of the lawsuit has prompted conservative mockery online, with figures like Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, noting the irony of Mamdani’s supporters turning on the fruits of his administration.
Over 70 percent of the East Village’s votes went for Mamdani in the recent mayoral election. How fast these upscale liberals turn on the Chosen One when it’s their ox being gored!

The lawsuit against the homeless shelter cites, among other things, environmental issues. Seriously? What environment? In that concrete jungle? Oh, I know, the East Village has parks and all that; it’s not all brick and cement. But if we put NIMBY on one side of the scale and the environment on the other to see which one motivates the East Village residents more, I’m betting on the former. And, honestly, can we blame them? I can understand they don’t want a building full of bums in their neighborhood. But it’s not the NIMBY that’s interesting here, but the hypocrisy, and the utter lack of understanding of what they were voting for: a clueless creature of the far-left who has never done an honest day’s work in his life.
The filing argues the city fast-tracked the process without proper environmental and legal safeguards.
“It challenges the city’s hastily made and legally invalid decision to locate a new citywide homeless adult male intake center at 8 East 3rd Street without following any of the legal requirements that must precede such a significant and consequential decision,” the filing reads.
To circumvent them, the complaint notes that Mamdani relied on an emergency declaration from 2022 — a power originally issued to handle an influx of asylum-seekers.
Mamdani announced the temporary housing project at 8 East 3rd Street as a way to accommodate the closure of Bellevue Shelter, a separate homeless intake site that the mayor’s office said had deteriorated too far for use.
Look, in cases like this, it’s difficult to have much sympathy for either side. The liberals of the East Village are showing a blinding, white-hot hypocrisy that can be seen from lunar orbit. Zohran Mamdani is showing his customary cluelessness, a trait which communists all seem to have in common. But let’s be real: When Mayor Mamdani’s term is up, should he run for another stint in Gracie Mansion, the East Village will turn out to vote for him, very likely by a 2-1 margin – again.
It’s as my grandfather was fond of saying: You can teach ’em, but you can’t learn ’em.
Editor’s Note: New York City is now facing the consequences of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s socialist takeover.
