For shoppers looking to get ahead of rising grocery prices and avoid relying solely on big-box retailers like Costco and Walmart, Trader Joe's has emerged as a popular alternative

Americans are due for a rude awaking in the checkout line this summer as a wave of price hikes looms.

Food prices are climbing amid the economic fallout from President Donald Trump’s tariffs, turmoil linked to the conflict with Iran and growing concerns over a potential super El Niño weather pattern that could further disrupt global supply chains.

These pressures are also driving up production and transportation costs for a very wide range of goods – increases that are already being passed on to shoppers across the US.

Food prices were up 3.2 percent on an annual basis in April, while overall inflation increased 3.8 percent, according to government data.

The surge in costs of staples such as beef, seafood, fresh fruits and vegetables are even higher, with snacks and soft drinks seeing some of the largest increases.

Shoppers are getting some price relief on items like eggs, dairy products and cooking oils, which are forecast to be cheaper than last year.

But for shoppers trying to make due, Trader Joe’s has emerged as a popular alternative to big-box stores thanks to its wide selection of budget-friendly staples and private-label products.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Olive oil could be one of the next pantry staples to see a sharp price increase.

The US imports more than 95 percent of its olive oil from Mediterranean countries, leaving shoppers vulnerable to rising fuel costs, shipping disruptions tied to the conflict with Iran and a 15 percent tariff on many European Union imports.

Analysts warn prices could climb significantly in the months ahead, with some forecasts suggesting a bottle that sold for $9.99 last year could approach $15 by the holiday season, according to a Forbes report.

For now, shoppers can still find relatively affordable options at Trader Joe’s, where a one-liter bottle of Mediterranean extra virgin olive oil sells for $10.99.

The blend combines oils from Italy, Greece, Spain and Tunisia, making it a versatile kitchen staple for everything from sautéing and roasting to salad dressings and bread dipping.

Chocolate Hazelnut Ground Coffee

Coffee is one of the grocery aisle’s most expensive pain points as a mix of tariffs, poor harvests and market speculation sends prices soaring.

Coffee prices jumped 18.4 percent over the past year, outpacing nearly every other household staple.

Most consumer goods and services – from groceries to cars and haircuts – have seen far smaller increases.

A pound of roasted coffee sold for an average of about $4.17 in 2020, compared with roughly $9.46 in 2026.

Several factors have fueled the spike: Drought conditions in Brazil and Vietnam, two of the world’s largest coffee-growing nations, reduced harvests and tightened supplies, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Beyond that, President Trump’s tariff policies imposed a 40 percent duty on Brazilian imports in July 2025.

Because Brazil is the world’s largest coffee producer, the added costs have filtered through the supply chain to the grocery store.

The Wall Street Journal also reported that hedge funds and commodities traders have been pouring money into coffee futures, wagering on the effects of shrinking harvests and tariff-related disruptions.

To get ahead, customers can indulge in Trader Joe’s chocolate hazelnut ground coffee, which goes for $8.49 a bag.

The coffee is sourced from Cerrado de Minas, one of Brazil’s most coveted coffee-growing regions, with fragrant notes of chocolate and toasted hazelnut.

Frozen meals are a go-to option when summer schedules get hectic, but rising demand can also mean higher prices.

For shoppers with extra freezer space, stocking up now could help avoid paying more later in the season.

Known for its extensive lineup of exclusive frozen foods, Trader Joe’s counts its Teriyaki Chicken Bowl among its most popular items.

Priced at just $4.79, the meal has been a customer favorite since its debut in 2004 and can be heated in the microwave in about four minutes.

For consumers looking to skip a pricier fast-food run or restaurant takeout order, the bowl offers a quick and affordable meal at a fraction of the cost.

Strawberries

Strawberries are feeling pressure from rising food costs as weather and supply chain disruptions continue to affect produce prices.

A highly perishable crop, strawberries are especially sensitive to extreme heat, drought and transportation costs, all of which can quickly impact supply and push prices higher at the grocery store.

When growing conditions tighten or fuel costs rise, those increases are often passed directly on to consumers.

At Trader Joe’s, a container currently sells for about $3.99, offering a relatively affordable option compared with higher-priced produce elsewhere.

Organic rolled oats

Oats have surged in popularity in recent years, fueled in part by social media trends like overnight oats that have taken over health and wellness feeds.

At the same time, they remain one of the most affordable and versatile pantry staples available, making them a popular choice for budget-conscious shoppers looking to stretch their grocery dollars.
