A fifth season of True Detective is in development, and while the fourth season’s creator will be back on board, the series isn’t expected to bring back Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. However, the new season could still be linked to Night Country in a major way.
True Detective: Night Country is the fourth season overall of the HBO series, but it’s the first without the creative involvement of original creator Nic Pizzolatto. Issa López developed Season 4 and served as showrunner, and it’s been announced that she will be back to make the anthology show’s fifth season as well. When asked if the new season or its characters will be connected to the Alaskan town of Ennis, where Night Country took place, López teased (per Deadline), “It might, or not, be connected to Ennis. We will see.”

The Ambiguous Ending of Season 4 Is Addressed
López was joined by Kali Reis to discuss True Detective at Deadline’s TV Contenders panel on Sunday. During the conversation, it was addressed what might be next for Reis’ character, Detective Navarro. Reis shared, “I have my own interpretation for Navarro, but I have not shared that with a soul,” while López teased that there actually is a clear answer subtly hidden in the Night Country finale.
“I think that if you look very carefully, very carefully at the show and follow the lines very carefully, there’s an answer to what we saw at the end,” she said. “But again, there’s a space for where your heart wants to live…and what you need to get out of it.”

True Detective’s fifth season can benefit by diving fully into Issa López’s horror expertise and evolving the vague nature of Night Country.
“The dead live among us — in that place of Ennis, but also in the Native American culture of those places,” the showrunner continued. “You embrace the death, dead people in your life, and they are part of this community and part of this village in some ways. So I find that it was pretty well established throughout this. It’s not surprising when you get to the end, and you’re not quite sure is she dead or is she not?”
The fifth season of True Detective doesn’t have a premiere date, but the first four seasons are streaming on Max.
