Since the beginning of 2021, the five latest expansions for UniVersus CCG have all focused on My Hero Academia, introducing more than enough additions to the game to create several decks that only use My Hero Academia-related cards. On November 17, 2023, the sixth of these expansions — MY HERO ACADEMIA COLLECTIBLE CARD GAME: JetBurn — was released, and in addition to a slew of other cards, it includes the perfect gift for veteran and rookie players alike: the Himiko Toga Clash Deck.

Who Is Himiko Toga?

In order to fully appreciate UniVersus‘ Himiko Toga Clash Deck, it’s helpful to first understand the role of its titular character as she pertains to the My Hero Academia anime. While most of the series focuses on the heroes that protect Japanese society, My Hero Academia puts its spotlight on the villainous underworld more and more as its narrative progresses. During Episode 31 of the series, this shifting focus results in the introduction of the bloodthirsty Himiko Toga, who appears in the fallout surrounding the capture of the Hero Killer Stain. After joining the League of Villains, she quickly demonstrates how dangerous she is using her Quirk, Transform, which allows her to perfectly mimic the appearance of any human she targets.

However, in order for Himiko Toga to initiate Transform, she must first consume her target’s blood — a requirement that played a major role in her turn toward evil before the events of My Hero Academia. Even though this Quirk doesn’t possess the same type of raw power as those wielded by individuals like Endeavor or Tomura Shigaraki, Transform is incredibly dangerous when wielded by a villain as crafty as Toga. Appropriately, her resourcefulness is represented throughout each of the character, attack, and foundation cards in the Himiko Toga Clash Deck that will be featured in the upcoming My Hero Academia CCG: JetBurn expansion.

Although it is possible (and often beneficial) to include multiple character cards in a custom UniVersus deck, the Himiko Toga Clash Deck instead builds around a single character: Himiko Toga. This brand-new, foil character card is the latest version of Himiko Toga to grace the My Hero Academia CCG, and compared to prior incarnations, the JetBurn version is a much better candidate to serve as the focal point of a deck. With health that far exceeds Toga’s counterpart in the Crimson Rampage expansion, this card is capable of weathering the storm against even the strongest attacks.

In addition to solid base stats, the Himiko Toga Clash Deck’s featured character card also comes equipped with a solid Enhance ability that complements the rest of the deck, giving the player a major boost to the speed and damage of their first attack each turn. Considering Toga’s tendency to strike from the shadows in My Hero Academia, it’s only appropriate that her character card reflects her skill at inflicting critical strikes.

Every single attack card in the Himiko Toga Clash Deck is directly related to its character card, and as result, they tend to place a major focus on opportunistic, situational plays. The deck includes two of its featured attack card, Deadly Ambush (both of which are foil editions), which allows the player to take two hit points away from their opponent whenever the attack is Enhanced.

In addition to Deadly Ambush, the Himiko Toga Clash Deck also includes multiple flurry-based attack cards like Multi-Needle Puncture and Series of Stabs. Altogether, the pre-made deck’s wide array of attacks is a fantastic way to represent Toga’s skillset, resulting in one of the more fun playing experiences of any UniVersus Clash Deck.

Much like the Himiko Toga Clash Deck’s attack cards, its foundation cards make similar use of the shape-shifting villain’s tendency to ambush her opponents. However, these cards do an even better job of highlighting Toga’s Quirk, Transform, as nearly half of them — including the deck’s featured foundation card, Abandoning All Inhibitions — are related to its powers.

In all, there are 32 total foundation cards included in the Himiko Toga Clash Deck, providing players with plenty of ways to approach each game. Considering the importance of foundation cards to building a successful turn, even veteran My Hero Academia CCG and UniVersus players can use these cards by incorporating them into their own custom decks.

While the Himiko Toga Clash Deck is certainly one of the most exciting parts of My Hero Academia CCG: JetBurn, it’s far from the only thing that the latest UniVersus expansion is offering. On November 17, 2023, over 150 new cards and 17 My Hero Academia characters (including Hawks and Hood) will be introduced to the card game, nearly all of which can be found in either the Ochaco Uraraka Clash Deck, individual JetBurn Booster Packs, or special deals like the 24-pack Booster Box.

For players looking to get an early jump on the JetBurn expansion, they can obtain a Pre-Release Player Kit from November 10-17 by attending any pre-release event found on the UniVersus Gaming Network. Pre-Release Player Kits contain 6 JetBurn Booster Packs (each of which contains 1 character card, 9 additional cards, and a Rare, Ultra Rare, or Secret Rare card), as well as an individually-packaged alt-art character card that makes for a great addition to any collection.
