Man United goalkeeper Andre Onana looks set to remain in Turkey for another season

Manchester United are close to agreeing terms with Trabzonspor for goalkeeper Andre Onana to play a second season on loan at the Turkish club.

Onana joined Trabzon last summer after it became clear that he had no future at Old Trafford and United told him to find a new club following the arrival of Senne Lammens.

The 30-year-old Cameroon international impressed during his season there, helping Trabzon win the Turkish Cup against Konyaspor in May.

Daily Mail Sport revealed last month that Trabzon wanted to keep Onana, and that another season on loan was the most likely outcome. United sources have confirmed that an agreement is close to being finalised between the two clubs.

A permanent move would have been preferable so United could recoup some of the £47.2million paid to Inter Milan for Onana in the summer of 2023, but they will receive a loan fee and resolving his future now avoids an awkward scenario.

United are conscious that the former Ajax keeper, who still owns a house on the outskirts of Manchester, has two years left on his contract and is due back for pre-season training at Carrington this month.

The club have already decided not to reintegrate him over the summer to compete with Lammens, even though they will be in the market for a new keeper if current No.2 Altay Bayindir leaves. The feeling is that Onana’s £120,000-a-week salary and extrovert personality would make it difficult to put him on the bench.

Lammens has established as United’s undisputed No.1 after an excellent first campaign in which his £21.7million move from Royal Antwerp was voted the Premier League’s transfer of the season.

United hope to sign a new No.2 if Bayindir leaves, and have been linked with Karl Darlow, of Leeds, and Wolves’ Sam Johnstone. The club have already handed a new one-year contract to veteran Tom Heaton.
