Sheffield United are keen on bringing Kalvin Phillips back to Bramall Lane, where he spent the second half of last season on loan

Sheffield United are working on a deal to bring Kalvin Phillips back to Bramall Lane.

Phillips signed for Manchester City from Leeds United for £45million in 2022 on a six-year contract and still has two years left on his deal.

The City midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan with Chris Wilder’s squad and the Blades’ boss is keen on keeping Phillips for another crack at promotion.

Phillips only made three appearances and the last was in the derby against Sheffield Wednesday when he got sent off.

He did not play again once his ban ended because of a knee injury.

The 30-year-old former England international was desperate to make an impact but his lack of games in recent seasons and subsequent shortage of match sharpness put him at a physical disadvantage.

The 31-cap international previously had loan spells with West Ham and Ipswich in the Premier League before linking up with Sheffield United in January.

Including his loan moves, he has made a total of 46 league appearances since joining City almost four years ago.

Talking to BBC Radio Sheffield towards the end of the season, Wilder said: ‘He’ll have a lot of people still after him.

‘We’ve brought a really good pro in. He was unlucky with his injury and he’s not played as much as he wanted to play.

‘I spoke to him and said we’d love to be an option for you, your agent and your parent club if that is a possibility.

‘He certainly ticks the box in terms of personality and characteristics, off the pitch and on it.

‘If there’s an opportunity I’m sure we’ll try and explore that one.’

Wolves, now in the Championship, had also asked about Phillips in January.
