Indonesia has recently been rocked by protests over unhappiness over low wages and what many perceived as excessive parliamentary benefits for lawmakers.

Anger was further ignited following the death of a 21-year-old Gojek delivery rider when he was run over by an armoured police vehicle.

Among the casualties of the protests is another delivery driver, Rusdamdiansyah (Dandi), who was reportedly beaten to death by a mob on Aug. 29 after being mistaken for a plainclothes police officer, reported CNA.

Offering support

To offer his condolences to Dandi’s family, Grab Group CEO and co-founder Anthony Tan travelled from Singapore to Makassar, Indonesia, on Sep. 1.

With him were other Grab Indonesia leaders.

Tan and the group offered prayers and support to the mourning family in the form of financial assistance and logistical help.

According to a Grab media release, the company will be providing the family with health coverage, ensuring that they remain protected for the next two years, as well as business capital with the GrabKios mentorship.

Tan said:

“The safety and security of driver-partners have always been Grab’s top priority. We are committed to being present not only when partners are working, but also when they and their families face difficult times. Grab provides tangible support, from compensation to long-term assistance programs, so that driver-partners continue to feel safe and protected. We also ensure long-term support for heirs, so affected families can bear this burden with a little more ease.”

More protection and support for drivers and riders

Tan also expressed his deep condolences on the passing of the late Affan Kurniawan in Jakarta, the rider who was run over.

Additionally, he extended prayers for the recovery of three others injured during protests.

In response to the disruptions caused by the protests, Grab Indonesia introduced GERCEP (Grab Respon Cepat or Grab Quick Response), an integrated emergency initiative.

From Sep. 2 onwards, partners across Indonesia can access GERCEP through three channels — a dedicated emergency hotline, a help center, and a livechat service.

These will allow partners to connect directly with trained emergency response agents, with the potential to escalate the case to a crisis management team if necessary.

All medical expenses for partners will be fully covered.

Should a protest occur, partners will also still be able to receive incentives even with a high number of cancellations.
