Alanis Morissette, 52, comes out as pansexual after sharing struggles with love and sex addiction

Alanis Morissette has publicly identified as pansexual at the age of 52.

The Jagged Little Pill singer discussed her sexuality during a recent appearance on the Handsome podcast, hosted by lesbian comedians Tig Notaro and Fortune Feimster alongside non-binary screenwriter Mae Martin.

The conversation turned to Morissette’s famously emotional and angst-filled music when Feimster told her, “I’m sorry for the men that hurt you, but I’m not sorry for the songs that came from it.”

She then asked the singer, “Did it make you want to be a lesbian at any point?”

Morissette replied without hesitation: “I’m pansexual, so yeah.”

Notaro appeared surprised by the revelation and asked, “Wait, you’re not really pansexual, are you?”

“I am,” replied the mother of three with a nod, prompting Martin to add, “Me too!”

Pansexuality generally refers to experiencing romantic, emotional or sexual attraction to people regardless of their gender identity or sex.

The term is distinct from bisexuality, although the two identities can overlap. Bisexuality broadly refers to attraction to more than one gender and, like pansexuality, may include attraction to transgender, non-binary and gender-nonconforming people.

The Head Over Feet singer has largely kept her romantic life private, although she has been linked to several high-profile men over the years.

Morissette has also spoken openly about previously struggling with love and sex addiction.

Her relationship with Full House actor Dave Coulier famously provided inspiration for her best-selling album Jagged Little Pill.

She later dated actor Dash Mihok and attorney Tom Ballanco. Morissette is now married to rapper Mario “Souleye” Treadway.

The Grammy-winning singer began dating actor Ryan Reynolds in 2002. The couple became engaged and remained together for three years before ending their relationship in 2007.

Reynolds began dating Scarlett Johansson two months after the split. He married the actress 18 months later, but the couple divorced in 2011. He went on to marry Blake Lively in 2012.

In 2008, Morissette’s interview with Howard Stern about the breakup attracted widespread attention. During the conversation, she attempted to laugh off intrusive questions about her sex life and revealed that she had needed therapy five days a week to cope with the heartbreak.

Looking back on the interview, Morissette told The Sunday Times in June that it “felt like the ongoing normalisation of me being invisible.” She added that she would respond very differently to such personal questions today.

“I have a million questions I could ask back that would be equally inappropriate. It just became normalised to hurt women every day, call her a b****, tell her she’s a slut,” she said.

When Stern referred to her earlier comments about attending therapy five times a week after the breakup, Morissette replied, “Therapy’s not about the guy… It’s about me. It’s not about the guy.”

Stern also questioned her about Reynolds quickly beginning a relationship with Johansson. Morissette paused before he pressed her, asking, “So what? He comes home and announces he’s with another broad?” Alanis responded emphatically, “No.”

Asked whether she had seen the breakup coming, Morissette nodded and acknowledged that she had prepared herself for the relationship to end.

Stern then asked whether she believed Reynolds was the kind of person who moved on immediately after falling for someone else. Morissette replied, “I can’t speak for him, I have no idea.”

Morissette married Souleye, whose real name is Mario Treadway, in 2010. The couple share two sons and a daughter, aged between 15 and six.

“There are just so many qualities in him that were slam-dunky,” she told The Sunday Times of her husband.

“If I would talk about something on a date, typically the person would look at me quizzically like I was strange. It was the complete opposite with Souleye. He had zero desire to clip my wings.”

Morissette has also said that she previously struggled with love and sex addiction, which she attributed in part to being an empath.

The singer is currently performing her Los Angeles residency, Butterfly with a Machete, a show that combines music with personal storytelling.
