Resurrection Season 2 Confirms Return Of Iconic Franchise Tradition Missing From Season 1

Though he may change his name and move cities, Dexter Morgan is still keeping the same old habits he’s had since the early 1990s.

As production kicks into full gear in New York City for Dexter: Resurrection season 2, writer and executive producer Scott Reynolds has given some exciting insights into filming so far, including some set pieces and props. To commemorate the 10th day of filming on April 24, Reynolds took to X to share an image from production of a donut box from The Donut Pub with the caption, “While some things change… some things stay the same.”

Dexter Morgan Eating a Donut

Reynolds is referring to Dexter’s franchise-long tradition of sharing donuts with colleagues or neighbors, which began in the original series during his time at Miami Metro before carrying on to his life in Iron Lake in Dexter: New Blood. Michael C. Hall’s Dexter Morgan being friendly and bringing donuts was one of the ways he attempted to wear the mask of “normalcy” in social settings, getting his colleagues to like and see him as a nice guy to detract suspicion from his serial killer double-life.

The origins of Dexter’s donut tradition were also revealed in Showtime’s canceled prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, revealing the first occasion on which he shared the sweets in 1991. While the donut tradition was featured in Dexter, New Blood, and Original Sin, it was notably missing from Resurrection season 1. However, Dexter had bigger fish to fry and wasn’t as focused on getting non-serial killers to like and trust him throughout the first ten episodes.

Now that Dexter is more settled into life in New York City, sharing donuts again in Resurrection season 2 makes more sense. The context of the donut box’s appearance in season 2 hasn’t been confirmed, so it’s possible they could be featured during Dexter’s UrCar drives, a new job for Dexter entirely, or even for his son Harrison Morgan (Jack Alcott) to make friends as he finally steps into the police force.

The donut return in the context of the police station would be the most fitting given it originated during Dexter’s career at Miami Metro, with the NYPD also confirmed to play a more prominent role in season 2. Paramount recently confirmed the additions of Bokeem Woodbine as Captain Mixon and Nona Parker Johnson as his daughter, Officer Fiona Mixon, in the homicide division, with Fiona also serving as Harrison’s new romantic interest.

It’s currently unconfirmed how long the time jump is after Dexter: Resurrection season 1’s ending, but the new episodes are expected to align more with the present day after the freshman season followed close after New Blood‘s 2022 timeline. As such, Dexter and Harrison will be more settled into their lives in New York City in season 2, seemingly kicking off with a greater sense of “normalcy” and routine akin to the original Dexter series.

In addition to Woodbine and Johnson, Dexter: Resurrection season 2’s confirmed new cast members include Brian Cox as The New York Ripper and Dan Stevens as The Five Borough Killer, two menacing new serial killers that Dexter and the NYPD will doubtlessly be hunting. Returning for season 2 are Hall as Dexter, Alcott as Harrison, James Remar as Harry Morgan, Kadia Saraf as Detective Wallace, Dominic Fumusa as Detective Oliva, and Uma Thurman as Charley Brown.

Dexter: Resurrection season 2 has yet to receive an official premiere date on Paramount+, but showrunner Clyde Phillips has previously indicated an October 2026 release for the crime series’ sophomore outing.
