Now that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is out in theaters, Nintendo fans wait for the next video game feature, The Legend of Zelda. Based on the 1986 video game franchise of the same name, the film is set to star. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda in a live-action setting. So far, these two are the only cast members attached to the project, and as filming resumes in New Zealand, it won’t be long till the first trailer is released.
The Legend of Zelda video games follow Link, a green-clad protagonist who embarks on various adventures to save Princess Zelda and the world of Hyrule from evil foes such as Ganon. Since its debut for the Nintendo Famicom, numerous games have been released, with the most recent installment being a spin-off called Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. But despite this project being highly anticipated and raising questions about whether Link will speak for the first time in the franchise’s history, details about the plot, the bad guy, and other cast members have been tight-lipped. But what’s not a secret is how Nintendo wants to showcase this iconic character.
Production for The Legend of Zelda movie has wrapped up in New Zealand. The film’s Director of Photography, Gyula Pados, shared a now-deleted photo of the movie’s clapperboard, which features another full-body image of Link. This depiction of this Nintendo character shows not only his iconic Master Sword, but also his shield on his back. While there was early speculation that The Legend of Zelda movie might be based on Breath of the Wild due to how Zelda is dressed, some fans noticed that Link’s appearance is similar to his look in Twilight Princess. As of writing, details about its plot and whether it will be an original story or based on an existing title have not been shared.
What To Watch While Waiting For ‘The Legend Of Zelda’ Movie?
As anticipation for the upcoming The Legend of Zelda movie continues, there are many titles worth watching as the wait time approaches the one-year mark. One recommendation is Disney’s live-action Pinocchio, released in 2022. While the film did not sit well with fans and critics on Rotten Tomatoes, earning a 27% score from both, Ainsworth delivers a great performance as Pinocchio, offering a sense of the kind of actor he is.
But if you want to see what a live-action Nintendo project is like without the company’s involvement and prepare yourself to see how things have changed once The Legend of Zelda comes out, then the 1993 Super Mario Bros. is worth a watch, even if it has a low rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as the iconic video game duo, the two embark on a wacky adventure to Dinohattan, an alternate universe that features humans evolved from Dinosaurs. While this movie made Nintendo hesitant to produce another Hollywood project based on its IP for decades, it does showcase where it all began and the attempts to bring Nintendo’s beloved characters to life in the early days before Nintendo got involved in later projects.
The live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda is scheduled to hit theaters on May 7, 2027. Follow Collider for more updates.
