Richard Gere says he feels his 26-year-old son Homer has what it takes to make it in the rough and tumble world of show business.
The A-list actor, 76, spoke with People about Homer’s rising profile, marked by a viral appearance on HBO Max’s Euphoria in which he appeared opposite Sydney Sweeney.
‘I’m proud of him on two levels,’ said Gere, known for films such as Pretty Woman, American Gigolo and An Officer and a Gentleman. ‘One, he’s really good. He really kind of preternaturally knows what he’s doing.
‘But he’s also handling it really well. He’s a good kid.’
Gere described his son, who he shares with ex-wife Carey Lowell, as ‘a really good young man who kind of gets it.’
Speaking about the unpredictable terrain of Hollywood, Gere said that acting ‘is not an easy job’ and ‘not everyone can function within it,’ adding, ‘I think he can stay.’

Gere, who’s currently promoting his role on The Agency, highlighted a number of his son’s growing list of credits.
They included the turn in the recently-ended Euphoria, as well as a role on The Shards from producer Ryan Murphy, in which Homer will perform opposite Kaia Gerber, the daughter of Richard’s ex-wife Cindy Crawford.
‘I still need to see his second episode of Euphoria, but he has this big thing coming up with Ryan Murphy,’ Gere said.
Gere noted his son also ‘just finished shooting a film’ with venerated director Oliver Stone.
He said in jest, ‘I can retire now. I’m passing the torch.’
Gere said he wasn’t putting any pressure on his son to fill his shoes in Hollywood, making clear he was fine with Homer pursuing anything that made him happy.
‘I don’t think he’s got to make a life choice to commit to this if he’s doing this now,’ Gere said. ‘He’s good at it and he’s having fun, but he can become a rock climber if he wants to do that.’
Gere in the interview spoke about how acting ultimately won out over his passion in multiple fields.

‘I’m still doing it, so it must have been the most powerful choice, but I was also a musician,’ Gere told the publication. ‘I was a studio musician and had a lot of other things going on.
‘But acting was the one that kind of brought it all together – my interest in psychology, philosophy, music, art.’
Gere said his ‘interest in just what is it like to be a human being,’ which complements his chosen profession.
‘It’s been kind of an amazing job, to filter all of my interests into this one thing,’ the actor said.
Gere related his role as a CIA official on Paramount+’s The Agency to aspects of everyday life.
‘We all take on different personas,’ Gere told the outlet. ‘You get up in the morning, your dog knows you as one person. Your kids know you as another person. Your husband knows you as another person. Your colleagues know you as someone else.
‘Everyone knows you differently. Where is the truth in the end? Where is that root self that you can come back to, and do you have to nurture that root self?’
Season two of The Agency begins streaming on June 21 on Paramount+.
