The 5 fashion rules you must follow when it comes to occasionwear

Whether it’s a summer wedding or a day at the races, occasionwear should feel fun… but it seldom does.

There’s something about dressing for an event that can stump even the savviest stylist.

The rules are often very poorly defined. What exactly are we to make of a wedding invite with the instruction ‘semi-formal’?

And then there are the problems of staying cool and then warm for an entire day, and being able to both dance and stand around looking elegant.

And you’ll need footwear suitable for the cocktail reception, a gravel driveway, the dancefloor, and the muddy field where your car is hidden.

Here are my five easy rules that will make getting dressed for any occasion feel effortless…

1. Fit before fashion

It doesn’t matter how trendy your outfit choice is if it doesn’t fit well or flatter your frame.

Look for styles that cinch at the waist – hidden smocking across the back works brilliantly here – and always buy with enough time to take pieces to your local tailor.

Having a hem adjusted or the waist taken in can make even the most affordable dress look considerably more expensive.

If you’re dramatically different sizes on top and bottom, consider a co-ord where you can separate pieces. The right fit instantly elevates an outfit and gives you confidence.

2. Stay true to your style

If you’re happiest in prints, don’t suddenly step out in block colour simply because you think you should.

If clean lines are your thing, don’t buy a puff-sleeve dress just because it’s trending. The best occasionwear should still feel like you.

If your style is classic, embrace that when shopping for event dressing – whether that’s a beautifully cut navy shift dress or a timeless trouser suit.

If you’re fun and flamboyant, go for bright, eye-catching prints even when the dress code says black tie.

3. Check the dress code…

… But don’t be a slave to it. In my opinion, overdressed is better than underdressed, but the reality is you’re going to be one or the other, and so will everyone else.

You’ll be envious of people who get away with something very modest, but also those who are totally peacocking.

Have fun with your look, but do make sure you have looked at the invite.

4. Get an investment piece

An occasion is an excuse to buy something for the next ten events – it doesn’t need to be a one-time purchase.

The best wardrobes are built around versatile investment pieces that can be styled differently for multiple gatherings.

A great slip dress can be worn with heels and statement jewellery for a wedding, then dressed down with a blazer – or even worn under a lightweight cashmere knit with flats for dinner.

A tailored trouser suit can work for everything from work events to weddings, depending on how you accessorise it.

Before buying something new, ask yourself how much use you are going to get out of it. Choosing pieces you genuinely love and will wear again is sensible and sustainable.

5. Accessorise in style

Accessories are one of the easiest ways to add personality and polish to an outfit.

I’m a huge fan of investing in timeless, versatile occasionwear and updating it with accessories that immediately make the look work for whatever event you’re attending.

Jazzy flats, of which there are plenty on offer this season, are ideal for a garden party or any event on grass where heels become impractical.

Gorgeous, chunky, gold jewellery will work with almost anything. And this season, consider investing in a silk scarf. Worn around the neck or styled as a headscarf, it instantly adds fashion credibility.
