For more than six decades, the world was insatiable for Warren Beatty.

His 1961 silver screen debut in Splendor in the Grass earned him overnight fame, and suddenly the actor was inescapable, landing starring roles in blockbusters like Reds (1981) and Dick Tracy (1990).

But these days, the former Hollywood Casanova is nowhere to be seen. At 89, the once-ubiquitous actor is now sequestered in his Los Angeles home – but, it seems, that is entirely by design.

‘Warren is a total recluse these days at his Los Angeles home, he does not really go out anywhere at all,’ a source exclusively told the Daily Mail.

‘He is not taking visitors, so [he and his wife’s] famous dinner parties are a thing of the past,’ they continued. ‘He has gotten tired and is not in the mood for socializing, he is over it.’

Gone are the days of glamorous hobnobbing with A-list stars: the actor hasn’t made a movie in a decade, and his last red-carpet appearance was in September 2021. In fact, Beatty has not been seen publicly in almost four years.

According to the source, Beatty’s reclusive lifestyle was largely inspired by his infamous Academy Award blunder in which he and his Bonnie and Clyde co-star Faye Dunaway mistakenly read out the wrong Best Picture winner. The error was at first blamed on the senior actors due to their ages, but it was later revealed they were given the wrong envelope by the PricewaterhouseCoopers accountants, who were responsible for them.

‘That made him want to stay away from Hollywood because it was so unfair and rude, he was like, “I’m out folks,”‘ the source said. ‘You have to remember he came from a classy era where people were nicer. So he felt like he did not want to be involved in such a mean-spirited era.’

Away from the lights of Tinseltown, Beatty’s life is much quieter.

‘His days are spent with more relaxing things like hanging out in his backyard and watching movies at home,’ our source said.

‘He wants his life to be really simple these days. The kids visit him, he does not go to them.’

He has four children with his wife Annette Bening: Stephen, 34, Benjamin, 31, Isabel, 29, and Ella, 26. His youngest daughter, an up-and-coming actress in her own right, was just seen at Sunday’s Tony Awards alongside Sarah Paulson, while Bening was a presenter at the ceremony.

Beatty, however, was nowhere in sight.

In fact, our source added, the Virginia native ‘has not been on an airplane in years’ and ‘has no interest’ in doing so.

‘The last time I saw him at an event was in 2020 at the AARP Awards and he was a bit spaced out and it did not seem like he wanted to be there at all, he was just sort of enduring the night,’ the source recalled.

‘He clung to Annette and they barely worked the room.’

Beatty met Bening, 68, while working on their 1991 mafia drama Bugsy and wed in 1992 – the definite end of an era for the notorious womanizer who had earned a reputation for bedding Hollywood beauties from Joan Collins to Madonna.

Meeting Bening, the Oscar winner would later say, was love at first sight: ‘It took about ten minutes [to fall in love with her]. Maybe five.’

In recent years, however, the pair’s starkly different lifestyles have been evident, with Bening seen largely solo in public. Our source, however, poured cold water on speculation of marital woes.

‘There is no tension between Annette and Warren, their marriage is OK,’ the source insisted. ‘He is like, “Go do your thing, chase your passion, just don’t drag me along!” He just wants to be home.’

Bening, they said, is ‘very in demand’: ‘She loves to work a lot.’

Last year, she was in Texas to film the Yellowstone spinoff Dutton Ranch with Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly, and most recently appeared in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride!

But it is Beatty’s older sister, actress Shirley MacLaine, who is the legendary star’s true foil.

Ironically, at 92, MacLaine is ‘the opposite’ of her baby brother.

‘She is very into socializing and going out,’ the source said.

‘Shirley is very sharp and together, and she also likes to go out and stay busy. She is not home watching the paint dry.’

The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Warren Beatty for comment.
