Michael Madsen's distressing private health battle revealed

Michael Madsen’s longtime attorney has suggested that the actor’s years-long struggle with alcohol contributed to his unhappiness before his death at 67, while also criticizing his two former wives.

The celebrated actor was found unresponsive at his Malibu, California, home early Thursday. His manager, Ron Smith, said Madsen died after suffering cardiac arrest.

Perry Wander, who represented Madsen for two decades, offered a stark account of the Pulp Fiction star’s final years.

“I spoke with Michael just two days ago,” Wander told Daily Mail. “I knew he wasn’t well.”

“Michael was dealing with the effects of alcoholism. He went in and out of rehabilitation several times and struggled to remain sober. He was unhappy with his life.”

According to Wander, Madsen was also embroiled in a costly legal dispute with his estranged wife involving child support and other financial matters.

“I blame her for putting pressure on him during the final years of his life,” Wander said, claiming the dispute led to Madsen’s passport being “maliciously revoked” and restricted his ability to travel and work internationally.

“Michael lived with many regrets, including his two marriages,” he added.

Smith confirmed that Madsen died from cardiac arrest, while authorities said there was no indication of foul play.

It remains too early to determine whether Madsen’s reported alcohol use played a role in his death. However, research from the National Institutes of Health has linked heavy drinking to a substantially higher risk of cardiac arrest.

Madsen’s struggles with addiction appeared to stretch back many years.

In 2019, he lost a $100,000 role in Confessions of a Serial Killer after crashing his Land Rover into a pole and being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was later sentenced to four days in jail.

He was arrested again for DUI in 2012 after driving erratically, but reached a plea agreement that required him to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings instead of facing more serious penalties.

When Madsen failed to complete the court-ordered AA meetings, however, his probation was revoked.

That same year, he was arrested at his Malibu home after allegedly becoming involved in a physical confrontation with his son, whom he had reportedly caught smoking marijuana.

Madsen was held on $100,000 bail after being accused of felony child endangerment involving cruelty to a child, a serious criminal charge.

No charges were ultimately filed against him in connection with the suspected child-endangerment incident.

Madsen is survived by five children. His son Hudson died by suicide in 2022 at the age of 26.

In a statement released Thursday, Madsen’s managers and publicist said: “Over the past two years, Michael Madsen had been doing remarkable work in independent cinema, including the upcoming films Resurrection Road, Concessions and Cookbook For Southern Housewives. He was excited about the next chapter of his life.”

“Michael was also preparing a new book, Tears For My Father: Outlaw Thoughts And Poems, which was undergoing editing.”

“Michael Madsen was one of Hollywood’s most distinctive and iconic actors, and he will be deeply missed.”

Wander also paid tribute, telling Daily Mail: “Michael’s legacy lives on through the films he made with Quentin [Tarantino] and his extensive collection of poetry books.”

“Michael was one of America’s greatest actors.”

Madsen was especially known for his recurring work with director Quentin Tarantino, appearing in Reservoir Dogs (1992), Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004), The Hateful Eight (2015) and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019).

He also played Sonny Black in the 1997 crime drama Donnie Brasco.

Madsen’s first marriage was to Georganne LaPiere, Cher’s half-sister. They were married from 1984 until 1988.

He had a daughter, Jessica, with Dana Mechling.

From 1991 to 1995, he was married to Jeannine Bisignano. The couple had two sons, Christian and Max.

Madsen married DeAnna in 1996, and they had three sons: Luke, Kalvin and Hudson.

His death came 11 months after a domestic-violence case in which he was accused of shoving DeAnna was dismissed for “insufficient evidence.”

“We are pleased that Michael Madsen can move past this matter and look forward to continuing our work together as this veteran and respected actor pursues new projects,” his representative said at the time.

It wasn’t Madsen’s first brush with the law. In 2022 the Hollywood actor was arrested for trespassing at a luxury house from which he was evicted, DailyMail.com reported - pictured

Madsen was arrested on a domestic violence charge after allegedly getting physical with his wife. He was also accused of locking her out of their Los Angeles-area home.

The Reservoir Dogs actor faced a misdemeanor domestic-violence charge and spent part of the weekend in jail before posting a $20,000 bond.

Several days later, his attorney, Perry Wander, told The Hollywood Reporter that Madsen was “not guilty of domestic violence.”

A representative for the actor confirmed the incident, describing it as “a disagreement between Michael and his wife” and saying they hoped it would be resolved positively.

Madsen filed for divorce from DeAnna in September 2024. In court documents obtained by DailyMail.com, he accused his estranged wife of contributing to their son’s suicide through alleged neglect, drinking and alcoholism.

A month later, Madsen posted an apologetic statement on Instagram, retracting the claims and saying he had not wanted to end the marriage.

“Losing a child is the most painful experience anyone can face. I deeply regret not correcting this sooner. I love my wife and our other four children, and I do not want a divorce or to assign blame,” he wrote.

“She had absolutely nothing to do with what happened to our son. It was a terrible loss and a decision whose reasons may never be fully understood because he is gone. I don’t believe my son is dead; I believe he escaped a life that no longer made sense to him.”

The 2022 incident was not Madsen’s first legal entanglement.

That year, he was arrested for allegedly trespassing at a $5.3 million Malibu mansion after being evicted from the property.

A source told Daily Mail at the time that Madsen had lived at the house since the previous year, although the lease was reportedly held in someone else’s name.

The property had been leased by another individual, and the source claimed several thousand dollars in rent remained unpaid.

The owner had reportedly spent two years trying to remove the tenants. Eviction restrictions introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the legal process by several months.

Madsen’s arrest came just one month after his son, U.S. Army Sgt. Hudson Madsen, died by suicide on Oahu, Hawaii, where he was stationed with the 25th Infantry Division. Hudson was an Afghanistan war veteran.

“I am in shock. I spoke with my son just days ago, and he told me he was happy. The last text he sent me said, ‘I love you, Dad,’” Madsen told the Los Angeles Times.

“I saw no signs of depression. It is devastating and heartbreaking. I’m trying to understand what happened and make sense of it.”

Hudson died one week after his wife, Carlie, underwent surgery to remove a breast tumor.

Madsen said his son’s marriage had been “going strong.” He added that Hudson faced ordinary financial pressures but wanted to build a family and was focused on the future. “It’s mind-blowing. I simply cannot understand what happened,” he said.

The actor called for a full military investigation into his son’s death, saying he suspected officers and enlisted personnel had shamed Hudson for wanting to seek therapy.

Madsen believed that stigma may have discouraged Hudson from seeking help for mental-health struggles he had kept private.
